There is no one in the world who isn't a fan of Jamie XX.

It took me over 2 years to really get hooked on their first album (Jamie XX's work helped renew my interest) and now I'm following this release intently. I've had Angels on repeat and listened to Chained over and over again. Romy's voice in particular has matured a lot. This is going to be one hell of an album.

  • 1 month later...

Picked it up for cheap ($7.99) at Target today, good deal. I'm enjoying it, let it play through without paying attention too much earlier today. Now listening more intently at home, I'm enjoying it. Vocals are more refined on this album, they harmonize really well. and Jamie's work is top-notch. I feel like this will be getting a lot of repeat plays from me.

More of the same, please :)

That's pretty much how it sounds to me... I wished for something different.

I've heard it about 3 times so far and I gotta say I'm a bit disappointed :( I really loved their minimalistic, negative space, whatever you wanna call it sound from the first album, but it just seems like TOO MUCH here. This album seems even MORE stripped down to the point that many songs sound the same to me... some back & forth singing, silence, more singing, more silence. Eventually most of the songs get interesting, but it's just not hitting me the same way their debut did. I haven't found any songs on here that I absolutely love yet.

I think the vocal melodies on this one just aren't nearly as strong. And that is what makes or breaks this band when you get right down to it. The debut had such pretty little ditties, which is absolutely necessary when you're making such minimal music with a lot of space. There needs to be some strong, yet spare melody to lure you in.

I was pretty baked when I wrote the first comment, and upon further listening I'm kinda with you on this... some song's are just too minimal. I think what I was noticing about the vocals being refined is just them being mixed a little more up-front on this one. However yeah there need to be just a little more vocals or something up front there. Maybe it will take more listens, maybe I'm just not in the right mindset, but while this album is decent and listenable there's just something subtle lacking to it that leaves a feeling of something to be desired.

It's the vocal melodies, dude.

Acutally, maybe I was a tad too harsh. I'm enjoying the album... my last post was after a close listen with headphones where I was focusing perhaps a bit too close. I still don't think it's got the magic of their first release, but it's a good album anyways.

What? I'm not fan of Jamie XX, the first album is not my cup of tea: listen all tracks which R ballads, which 2 make sleep up, I say no thank u! & quality music, it's the other thing, but what it's boring! I regretted buying their first album...

I'm going 2 listen their new album but b not amazed if I don't still stick on this group...

Still haven't bothered with this. I've heard a few tracks on radio and they just seem totaly boring. Maybe this music works if you are in a boring mood? Sceptisim remains.

It's mellow as hell, I can't lie. I had the exact same skepticism and apathy with the first album. I inadvertently streamed this album a couple times in a row at work - I never felt like I was trudging through it nor getting absolutely hypnotized either.

Coexist is undeniable pretty and well-produced though, and the lyrics are engaging imo. I dunno, I'm one who often disregards genres like R&B (of any era or production value), sleepy singer-songwriter stuff, and I can get bored of even the most well-produced "chillout" tracks out there very quickly. I guess this combines all of that perfectly for me - it has just enough electronic flourishes, ethereal guitars, pretty vocals, etc.

Everyone seems to be blowing smoke up their arse at the moment. Sounds like winebar music imo. I dunno, I think it's all slightly po-faced and pretencious to my ears. I mean the lyrics are a bit fucking wet lol. There are some nice flourishing synths and guitars, I get that bit. All the singing is a bit boring, I mean after a while you want some madman to start fucking screaming or do something (that of course is probably just me) I'd like an instrumental album of this, minus all the wanky lyrics and singing.

To sum up? Makes me wanna listen to Napalm Death. Very fucking loud.

For example the track Missing, absolute beautiful music but once the 2 singers start weeping over it? It kills it for me.

Perhaps the vocals will grow on me, though I doubt it.

I get what you mean though - there's music that's enjoyable and there's music that fucking blows you away, and xx is definitely the former and not the latter
