I read that John Digweed no longer charges to DJ. He just requests that whoever wants to book him pays his travel expenses. Sounds a fair deal to me. Guys a legend, still has phenomenal skills and selection abilities. True mark of a DJ - 20+ years in the business and definitely not milking the masses these days!

Nevermind i just saw this now in general banter

MODS plz delete

thats pretty badass.

there are always veterans willing to do it "for the love of the game" after making a million. sad how rare that is now.

This seems highly unlikely to me.

Maybe he's ok with not taking money for himself from his bookings but there's a whole company surrounding this guy that is at least partly dependent on him bringing in money by playing shows. I believe pretty much everything is done through Bedrock (releases, bookings, showcases) but I can't imagine Bedrock having enough income/liquidity from just sales and royalties to keep things up and running.

I've been working for agencies and events for about 6 years and at first I thought everybody was getting so much money but then you see how much it costs to keep someone/something in business and not so much is left at the end of the day.

Of course there are (quite a few) exceptions and people make a good living out of touring but there's more to it than pocketing 5000,- for playing a 1,5 hr. set.

Why do you still DJ?

Because I love it.

What does it evoke from you?

When you spend half your life doing something you enjoy, it’s second nature to me. If I have a couple of weekends off I want to get out and play. You know for me, there’s nothing better than sharing the music I love with people who want to hear it. I don’t look at it as work—I look at it as a fun time. I don’t charge for DJing, I charge for flying to get there now. The traveling is the aspect I charge for; the DJing is free.

I guess I'm wrong.

Only thing that still makes me slightly doubt it that he actually does not ask for anything more than a ticket and a hotel room is the way he words it: "The traveling aspect I charge for; the DJing is free"

Seems sort of open to interpretation.

All in all it doesn't really matter; Digweed is a great DJ and a respectable guy.

Was a massive bedrock fan 2001 - 2005, went to pretty much every London party (and some of the ones they held in Brum / Brighton). Picked up his recent Cordoba mix CDs and I must say CD1 was pretty damn awesome, CD2 not so much... guess I prefer the "building" element to his sets rather than the peak time bangers.

His transitions CDs from a few years back were also pretty essential.

Its weird to think those people have that much money...

the blog is a bit of a painfull read though but some interesting reading if you can manage it wihout getting to annoyed by it ;)

this was my fav bit on the explosive growth of edm article

"We found nearly all EDM interest to be concentrated into four specific sub-genres: House, Trance, Techno, and Dubstep. While I initially resisted lumping everything into these four groups, our experiments showed that virtually no one could tell the difference between tracks in more specific sub-sub-genres, like progressive house or hardcore techno"

You even get a Pie-chart! ;)
