Playing the modulator separately from the carrier in FM synthesis

Recommended Posts

I sequence notes to control the pitch of the carrier.

I sequence different notes to control the pitch of the modulator.

I make harmonic fun times.

Any idea what I can use to do this besides Max, pd, Reaktor, etc? Preferably a VST of some sort.

You could kinda sorta do it with 2 instances of FM7/FM8, one running into the audio input of the other. Then just use that audio as a modulator.

I just did with the Ring Modulator + silence + Key Tracker = oscillator trick in Renoise, but I suppose that might work as well.

i do this a lot in max, it's always a good time. i usually play with a 3 osc setup, with a modulator on the modulator.

i also like to draw a spectrogram of the output, fm synths have really gorgeous spectra, especially when you get weird with them.

i don't really have any advice, just wanted to drop in and say hi. *squelch*

It could be done with the Preen as well, but you'd need to convert the notes for the carrier to CCs. Probably would be pretty easy in Numerology. :)
