Sony shuts Wipeout video game studio in Liverpool

Recommended Posts

It would seem unfair to be pissing on their grave but in my opinion they turned the Wipeout franchise into somewhat of a watered down version of it's former self. I mean this

seemed 100 times less exciting than this

(It may be the whole tDR involvement that biased my opinion on the older releases.)

Though to be fair they steered things in the right direction with the PS3 version.

EDIT: I'm an idiot, I didn't realise Studio Liverpool were the new name for the Psygnosis team.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Total shame, Psygnosis had the bomb cinematic intros for PS1, and The Designers Republic to boot! They were unstoppable circa '96

Positive Metal Attitude

I wonder why they shuttered the studio? Wipeout 2048 on the Vita did well (dunno about actual sales, and considering it's the Vita...) Hopefully the talents there were relocated to other studios within Sony.

They made this sweet game for the PSX called Destruction Derby, pretty decent soundtrack and a fun little game. Plus Wipeout had a pretty awesome soundtrack at the time, with The Designers Republic to boot

RIP

i have been an avid player of wipeout games for many years and i still get a lot of play time (multiplayer anyway) from wipeout HD on PS3. would have totally continued to support the franchise and bought future versions - as i'm sure so would a lot of other people. cannot understand why they have shut down studio liverpool :(

RIP

I haven't played a wipeout game since I had the PS1. But this is sad, remember the series fondly.

Dug out this old classic tome, it's been a while but the Wipeout memories are still there.

Amazing.

Hard to believe that artwork was made in 1995 (right?). It looks very contemporary.

Back then they called it "futuristic" :)

And xpander is a nice tune, one of my favs also. I used to have them all, downloaded piece by piece from some strange game ost site. The rest of the sasha tunes aren't nearly as good though..
