Tomahawk - Oddfellows

January 29, 2013

"Alterna-metal insitution Tomahawk is returning early next year with Oddfellows, their long-awaited fourth album and first in six years. The supergroup (that's Faith No More barkjaculator Mike Patton, Jesus Lizard aggy-twanger Duane Denison, and Battles drummer John Stainer) have replaced bassist Kevin Rutmanis with the mighty Fantômas/Bungle/Madlove bassist Trevor Dunn, who has been dutifully blogging for us while hitting on the road on Melvins Lite's record breaking 51 States in 51 Days Tour. Oddfellows is easily Tomahawk's most diverse to date: There's groany, smoky, Morricone-jazz; there's twisty AmRep-gone-R&B bludgeon; and, most notably, there's the types of epic, majestic choruses that Patton diehards might remember from the final Faith No More LP, Album of the Year. You can check out first taste "Stone Letter" below, buy the Record Store Day 7" on November 23, download it on iTunes on December 4, or hear it live at one of these confirmed tour dates..."

Very cool news !

I actually only know the first self-titled album, which was really good. I had a listen to Mit Gas but never went back to it for some obscure reason. Ist the other album good ? Also, where's Patton's voice in this trailer ?

I like Mit Gas as much as the first. I was turned away from the third one (Anonymous) due to the heavy American Indian theme and lack of actual singing, so I didn't listen to it right away. Eventually I came to realize it's quite good, especially musically, but it's still my least favorite of the three.

Adding Trevor Dunn significantly increases Tomahawk's potential to actually release a great record. Maybe after this they can add Danny Heifetz (but keep Stainer, too). And Trey Spruance. Yeah, that would work.

Though a massive FNM fan, Tomahawk and Mr Bungle seemed to pass me by, and I'm not so sure why.

Fantomas is aweome, Suspended Animation is a brilliant album, though not exactly an easy listen

  • 3 months later...

I ended up playing it twice yesterday, definitely some good stuff on it. More straight-forward than Mit Gas, I guess more like the debut in a way. It's not without its own charm though. I dig it, looking forward to more listens and seeing them live next month!

This is an appropriate response.

I had a listen.. but I just want them to be Faith No More ie. more soaring choruses and such.. thus leaving me a little disappointed. This is my first experience with Tomahawk since a brief listen to the first album though so I'll give it some more time.
