Some Aphex tracks remixed using the Super Mario Kart sound font

Recommended Posts

Just stumbled upon this today. The whole album is composed of tracks done with the sound fonts of the original Super Mario Kart for Super Nintendo. The track Aphex Peaks is a remix of "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball" and "4". Check it out! A lot of tracks on there are good, and it's a free album.

I've noticed that there are some things that I really, really enjoy listening to, but that I don't find anyone else making.

So, under the name of anosa, I made some example songs myself, as well as a checklist.

I ask of you, dear musician: make more music like this.

Here's the checklist:

-bigbeat and dubstep. (these two..

Fuck off.

You can't stop at the first item in the checklist...

-bigbeat and dubstep. (these two go together perfectly, so mash them!)

-dubstep in 3/4. (or 6/8. this works really nicely with the growling wubbing synths!)

-repeated vocals. (it's fun!)

-chopped breaks, in a funky way. (really this is quite common, so keep it up!)

-jazz combined with dubstep. (I'm talking about the dissonant chords and weird progressions. none of that smooth jazz stuff. Why is this so impossible to find?)

-distorted bassdrums. (especially if they carry a bassline/progression. luckily this is also pretty common!)

-slap bass. (add for instant funk. FM bass is also acceptable.)

-bit crushed chords. (or leads. the aliasing is delicious.)

-vibrato. (especially on chords. especially on bit crushed chords.)

-sax. (even fake sax is awesome. same for violins.)

-weird chord progressions / sampled chords. (basically, just sample a chord and treat it like a lead synth. it's fun!)

-disco sampling. (the world can always use more of this.)

-insane sampling. (listen to the fourth track here. do stuff like that.)

somehow even though he used a snes soundfont it ends up not evoking a true SNES style or aesthetic at all. good attempt but if i were him i'd go back to the drawing board

Soulfull stuff this! Remarkably, he captures the essense of both afex twins and 16bits, turning it into something far better than the sum of its parts in the process. geniouse.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

I haven't listened 2 it yet, but that doesn't look like 2 me the whole a music puzzle/headache, just 2 "copy/stick" 2 assemble the tracks in question, then remixed 2 have a sound style Super Mario Kart...

edm = electronic dance music ? (i'd rather ask watmm than look it up, for fear of what i might find)

Oh so it was a joke on the part of the poster. Really, i am hopeless. It just seemed logical that kids would start using a term so silly. ah welL.

Thanks anyway. ;-]

Yeah, like he just loaded it into Ableton or something..

And fucking zole at him requesting bitcrushed/sampled chords, pitchbend etc. Ever heard of the demoscene, buddy?

at least the phrase Electronic Dance Music doesn't sound as retarted as Intelligent Dork Music

I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

Pretty sure only Americans use EDM. The UK actually knows genres of electronic music.

I think that's just British empire guilt and a feeling of inadequacy for being proliferated by whiney synth pop emo electronic music until Americans invented techno and house, then you guys acted like the kings of electronic music and acted like we copied you. When in reality we all just copied an Australian guy Tom Ellard
