Please explain the Alien Universe to me

I watched Prometheus this week as its out on DVD etc as I find the cinema to be a rip off. I've seen a few of the Alien movies on TV but never from start to finish but I have seen most of the Alien vs Preadtor ones. Anyway I really enjoyed Prometheus but wasn't sure how it all fitted in or what it meant so read up about it online.

But my question is how does the whole universe mesh together, is AvP an accepted part of the same universe or is it a spin off? The gigantic engineers created humans, all well and good. Years later Ripley and co stumble upon another planet with a crashed ship and set the Alien loose again, this spawns a few more movies. But where do the Predators come into it which is meant to be set before Prometheus?

I'd love someone to explain it to me like I'm an idiot whilst I watch the whole series from the begging properly. Started watching Alien today, I think I may be in that unique position I envy in others where a whole series of good movies may have passed me by.

Predator stuff was a spin off and not considered part of the "Alien Universe."

What was the general consensus among fans with Prometheus, did they like it or think it was like Jar Jar binks?

I think it's probably the same as with most "franchise resurrections."

You have one camp that thinks the original stuff is sacred and shouldn't be tampered with.

And them you have the camp that is less precious about blighting the legacy or whatever.

here we go:

okay, so Weyland-Yutani corporation has mining ships/colonies on other worlds and moons, one of the ships, the Nostromo, is sent to a moon, and on this moon they find a ship, with what seems to be a giant dead pilpt, the space jockey, dead but was apparently piloting the craft, on the ship they run into a giant room filled with eggs, out of one of the eggs a face hugging parasites attaches itself to a member of the Nostromo, he is brought back on board, they try to take the thing off and find out it has acid for blood and cannot be removed, it falls off eventually, he is now infected with a xenomorph embryo, it bursts out of his chest at dinner, the thing runs off squealing, it later is found to have grown and shed skin, and is the most adaptive predator mankind has ever found, it kills everyone on, not before the Android Ash reveals that it was the plan to get the thing on board by the Weyland-Yutani Corp, THe main character Ripley is left to battle the xenomorph and opts out to escape but the alien is one the escape cart and Ripley blows it out of the air lock hatch, she is found many years later by SPACE PIRATES??? and then taken to earth to tell her stpry about her experience with the alien and how bad ass evil it is and she finds out the moon where the alien was from was colonized, she freaks out and wants WY Corp to get the people off of the moon but NO, they have already lost touch with the colony, they are all most likely xenomorph meat, her and a bunch of space marines go to the moon and find a deserted colony cept for a little gril that had been hiding from the xenomorphs, blah blah blah, bunch of aleins kill the shit out of the marines, Ripley loses the little girl, go to look for her and fins the QUEEN ALIEN, Ripley fucks her up real good but eh QUEEN follows her back to the ship being flown by the synthetic man Bishop. she boards the craft after the colony was set to self destruct by Bishop, they escape, but NO WAIT, the queen is one board the ship and ripley has to BATTLE her, she calls her a bitch and fucks her up good with a mech dock loader, throws the bitch out the airlock, just like the first film, and she floats in hypersleep around again for many years, ripley and the others crash land onto a prison planet, everyone is dead except for Ripley, all hell breaks loose when one of the facehuggers gets out of the escape pod. IT HAD BEEN HIDING THERE FOR EVER! havoc is everywhere on the space prison planet, BUT WAIT, RIPLEY has a xenomorph in her and the man who was the original human copy of bishop shows up unexpectedly and Ripley throws herself and newly born xenomorph into molten metals, the end???? NOOOOO! so some people clone Ripley with the xenomorph in her, this film is about her being a clone of herself, then there are two crossover genre films alien vs predator and alien vs predator: requiem, they are ass films, we then learn that all life on earth is the product of a group of higher intelligence beings that are dubbed the Engineers, humans find cave paintings that point to system of stars and thus planets and thus the moons of the original film's star system, we go looking on a different moon than form the first film for the origins of all life, we find the engineers, we fuck this whole thing up by being egotistical and thinking we should be able to live forever, we find a weapon they created that ended up destroying their selves and leaving a group of engineers dead on a military base of theirs, these bioweapons infect the team of scientists that are searching for our creators, all hell breaks loose, all that is left after the shit hits the fan are an android named David and Dr Elizabeth Shaw, now they are heading towards the home planet of the Engineers.....................

AvP has been largely relegated to non-canon, except for one character. Peter Weyland from Prometheus is the son of Charles Weyland from AvP, and making him as old as he was, it's plausible he was born before Charles went on expedition to Antarctica and was never seen again.

Also, LV223 (Prometheus planet) is NOT the same as LV426 (Alien & Aliens planet). The Engineer ship crashing at the end of Prometheus confused a lot of people into thinking that was the opening set piece of Alien.

AVP is a cross-over story dating back to the 90's. it was a comic by Darkhorse Comics.

We're all aliens around here. So maybe that explains something?

in all fairness you're asking us to explain the Star Wars universe to you after you've just seen Phantom Menace or Clone Wars but never watched New Hope, Empire or Jedi all the way through.

It's like having us explain why all the storm troopers are all of the sudden retconned clones and not normal guys with their own personalities, or why the 'clone wars' is robots VS clones which completely strips said war of any actual impact or meaning. Or why the technology in the future looks far grittier and less advanced than technology in the past. Most prequels give little respect to the cannon or aesthetic and Prometheus is no exception

IT's honestly not even worth it because the guy who wrote LOST wrote a half baked script that pretended to be expansive but was completely incongruent with the rest of the alien movies.
