I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

Didn't IDM aesthetics essentially become marketing tools near the end of the 90's/throughout most of the 2000's? If I remember correctly, the abstract, sleek, complex synthetic sounds and visuals of 'IDM' bled heavily into commercialism. And wasn't much of IDM aesthetics ambiguously commercial to begin with? It seems like the whole visual/sonic ideas of most of the featured artists here were part of a nihilistic and ambivalent movement of "I don't care. Sell as much as possible. This is the new millenium" vibe that the designer's republic and other cultural fixtures shared at the time.

By now that style has become banal, commercialism ate it up, spit it out, and uses its zombified remains to sell stuff still with "Woah awesome computer graphix! BUY NEW NISSAN CAR!". In a way IDM put itself out there like "Hey guys. look at this hi tech shit we're doing. we're so politically irrelevant. just try to sell us!"

Yup. Which to me is a way of saying it was ahead of its time, as we all knew then. Now IDM's laptop folk aesthetic has been polished into a turd shiny enough for mass consumption.

Anyone notice when you have an idea while taking a shit and somehow the act of shitting makes that idea seem really interesting and potent but when you are done wiping you go on to think more normal thoughts? That's probably what IDM sounds like to most people.

Although I don't remember them being used as marketing tools during the period you mentioned, at least in the U.S. After the mid-90s "electronica" bubble burst, phobia of ostentatious music technology was the commercial norm outside of hip-hop/crunk/etc. Which fit nicely with Bush 2 era paranoia, but I digress.

The stutter edit (formerly known as buffer override) is probably what turned mainstream trajectory back in then-derelict IDM's direction, and the "bass" drop became the new guitar solo.

This is probably at least 20% bullshit but it was fun to write.

I saw parts of this movie on tv yesterday. It's from 2001 and has an IDM soundtrack with Telefon Tel Aviv and others.

One of the characters (the guy with glasses of course) is an IDM producer, complete with gear pron shots of his bedroom studio.

Its IDMness is probably why I never heard of it until yesterday. It's a John/James Hughes film btw.
