Donny McCaslin is one of the top young tenor saxophonists on the scene and I've liked him for a while. When I saw that his album that came about about a month ago had Alpha and Omega on it, I blew my beans.

Here it is:

By the way, do you think BoC themselves end up hearing stuff like this? Would Donny McCaslin had to have gotten permssion from them?

Sweet! I thought there were two songs playing at once about half way through there... I like what the drummer is doing throughout.

Yeah i'm sure you need permission to put it on a release..

Interesting cover; however, a large portion of my enjoyment of 'Alpha and Omega' comes from the sheer amount that is going on in the sonic periphery; details which are largely absent from this cover.

i also prefer the first section. the wind parts are awesome but the lack of subtlety in the drums and (especially) the bass is jarring.

Yeah honestly I was a bit disappointed with it myself. But there is still a lot of excitement over a group of some of my favorite jazz musicians even attempting to make a cover of one of my favorite BoC tunes.

Of all the non-electronic BoC covers I've heard, this one of Roygbiv is the best (also jazz): http://worldworld.bandcamp.com/track/roygbiv

the fact that people still make covers of electronic music completely baffles me... the whole reason we like it is that you CAN'T "play" it. It's all about timbre and precise exact rhythm... when you lose those two things... it's just lame.

You telling me you don't dig the sense of melody in any electronic artist you enjoy?
