what they need is to gain the support of their communities to boycott those individual walmarts until they get their shit together. it rarely happens but it can happen, and they will take notice if it does happen.

true, something similar happened out by me (unsuccessful though). a neighborhood tried to stop em from building a new store near em (literally not even a mile away from another), so what they did was block off the street that the walmart was gonna build on claiming it to be a "neighborhood only" street, so no thru traffic allowed. yeah, that didn't work. lol wlamart just moved the location a block down and the community no longer had say. and it actually severely hurt other businesses in the area since their road access to them was now limited.

 

i guess my point is that its almost impossible for any effect to be made because the people that are trying to boycott are pretty much dependent on the store. they say "hey we want off, or else were gonna strike" so walmart replies, "k, your all fired" and then hires a bunch of new people the next couple days. which isn't hard since walmarts are always near low income residential areas with people all looking for a job that requires no experience. its one of the very few places offering more than just a handful of jobs and if the community backlashes they lose one of the few potential job sites they have.

but like i sad before, i feel bad that they have to deal with this. Walmart already makes a shit load of money and is one of the few companies that doesn't need to rely on Black Friday. they should at least give the people Thanksgiving off.

 

though, what i find hilarious is that the people that were going to the Walmart Thanksgiving night to beat the Friday lines (which is the whole reason why this protest was started) was most likely comprised mainly of the same individuals that is protesting to get the day off in the first place (ie. the employes).

im certainly not supporting working holidays, but I find it strange that people still feel entitled to holidays off?

 

I mean, I can't think out of the past 10 years ive worked where i didn't work a Christmas or Thanksgiving...in fact I think this Thanksgiving will be the first that I'll be able to sit down for dinner with my family.

 

thats pretty fucking depressing now that I think about it....I haven't had a Thanksgiving dinner with family for a decade of my life.

i hope you enjoy it man. and i think the reason people feel entitled is because most businesses are actually closed on days like Thanksgiving and Christmas. most people actually like to be with their family and being made to work on one of the biggest family gathering holidays can be pretty upsetting.

This. I'm currently stuck in that shithole and anyone who even thinks about it is gonna lose their job. Walmart is hiring tons of seasonal employees anyway and lays them off/ cuts hours in January (like I get 32 now and ill get 15 or maybe 20).

 

It's a risk with no benefit. Walmart knows its employees are miserable, it just doesn't care.

as to shitty chains to work for, Darden restaurants (Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Longhorn Steakhouse, etc) has basically put a cap on "full time" workers of 32 hours per week, so when Obamacare kicks in, they will not have to provide health benefits, vacation, or sick time to the people who keep that fucked up company in

business. We haven't eaten at those in over a year. They also have class action suits against them for sexual and racial discrimination of employees.

 

Reading Papa john's and Applebee's also looking for ways to skirt the Affordable Health Care act. Stay informed as these piece of shit businesses don't deserve our money.

oh fuck that Olive Garden you fucked up. I love some soup and salad but you fucked up

employers regularly put employees on for just enough hours to avoid giving benefits. in fact gov't employees in new york state were recently getting fucked by a similar scheme, and it was deemed illegal in state courts. my sister was working 39.5 hours a week so she wasn't "full time" and as such could not reap benefits of full time workers (health care, etc)

I guess I'm starting to sound like a spokesperson for Adbusters or the OWS movement, lol.

 

It's stupid how excited people get about national chain stores or restaurants opening here in Anchorage. Like when Olive Garden opened here last year, I heard there were lines of people trying to enter within the first two weeks of its grand opening. I just shook my head. Besides, first time I ate at OG was shortly after my family and I moved to New Jersey in 1993. But that didn't hold a candle to the authentic local Italian restaurants throughout the state.

 

As for Wal-Mart, there's already a new store being constructed here, which is due for completion by 2014.

Olive Garden has gone way the fuck downhill in the last 10 years. Not that it was ever great food, but now it's like $17 for a fucking shitty Chicken Parmesan, which is basically more expensive than actual great Italian restaurants cooking real (or at least good local varieties of) Italian food, even in over priced fucking Los Angeles.

 

Fuck that place, especially if they treat their employees like shit.
