Cool, be sure to also check out the other entries, as there are a lot of breakbeat infected entries, all .xrns's (+ .ogg versions of the tracks) collected here: ubuntuone.com/6npxdH2dDTQReqc0TrHNMX

This is impressive. Especially all the crazy stuff near the end!

I need to know something. How long does something like this take you?

I can only program these kind of beats for a few bars or so, until everything starts to sound like crap, and even that would take me quite a while. Is it just years of practice or what?

Not that I didn't put a lot of work in this, but yes also years of practice, I started tracking in 1993 and have a knack for rhythms probably ;-) . The base for this track was made around 2008, left to collect dust until this compo swung around for extra attention, I don't keep track of time so can't really tell how long in total. A few days without sleeping probably?

For my breakbeatcoredrillstep tracks I often start with determining a kick groove in the first channel, use it to duck the volume of the other channels (sidechaining) and use it as a kind of anchor for the rest of the beat channels to hold on to. Once the kick and snare offsets are solid you can fill the gaps up with basically anything :) .
