Uhhh... Who 'performed' Gescom live sets

Recommended Posts

That's a good question. The same thought crossed my mind on many occassions. Perhaps Gesom have gimps who do all that dirty work for them?

A local homeless person that is paid a bottle of their choice liquor. All they need to do is press a button and dance around.

Did anyone here ever go to a Gescom show to see who was actually performing. Listening to the Straosburg show now and while I'm all about the mystery for releases, but it's like someone actually appeared and performed this set no?

i never saw Gescom (only Autechre) but i remember talking to someone on soulseek (i think) about that "2003" skam tour & he said he went to that night in Paris (2 dates : Paris & Strasbourg) &, regarding Gescom, that was only Rob Hall mixing.

There is also this french article (with one false information, Rob Hall is a part of Gescom, not Ae..) about those 2 dates, with Quinoline Yellow & Freeform :

if i remember correctly didn't Russel Haswell play a few sets with Sean and Rob, or maybe just Sean around or after the time the Gescom Minidisc release came out (using the alias Gescom)? Am i imagining that? Because i know i've heard a rather noisy synth bleeps and bloops gescom live set that has absolutely no beats in it, might be a fake though, but this was years ago when there weren't as many fakes out for aphex and autechre, it even predated that stupid fake aphex prodigy remix that so many people would show me and argue with me that it was really aphex... assholes

Oh boy, I remember that back in the Napster days - what track was it (or was it some unsigned person trying to palm off their music) ?

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Haswell was involved in MiniDisc, so it makes sense

I Remember that!! I have no memory of what it sounded like. It always seemed like when clueless friends would get into Aphex they would put that and the AFX fake "Violin solo" (something liek that??) on a mix CD. ((sorry for the off topic talk))

Didn't that 'remix' (I think it was called 'Breathe like an Aphex Twin') just use a percussive loop sample from Green Calx sped up over Prodigy's 'Breathe'. On the topic, anyone remember that mash-up of Pink Floyd and Underworld with 'Aphex Twin Mix' suffixed to the end of the title?

the weirdest fake i got (& deleted..) was some confield fake tracks, from audiogalaxy, just before the release date. like kinda autechrian tracks with beats, i only download like one minute of a couple of tracks, as it was 10 years ago & took ages... when i got the proper record, i realized the tunes were fakes, so i deleted them, only to read in a recent interview that around confield, sean booth had some homemade confield fakes that no one downloaded from him, put on P2P network.. i'm wondering if it was the one i deleted or just some old classic fake tunes..

i was at the gescom minidisc performance in manchester catheral in 1998; part of the shock city celebrations. as far as i recall there were seven or eight members on stage for that one; all dressed in white labcoats with white-bandaged heads kneeling at the front of the stage frantically playing and ejecting random bursts of content from two (?) portable minidisc players each. i heard later (magic feet magazine?) that haswell and fitton were among them. given the number of bodies on stage i assume williamson was there as well. all i know for sure is that booth and brown (unbandaged) were in the cloakroom area at various points throughout the day.

This sounds fucking awesome. Not the usual gescom collective dj sets which they mostly seem to do when they appear 'live'.

interesting, wonder if he was telling the truth or not. He reiterated in the same interview where he said my priorities were 'clearly fucked' that 'we've made fakes before but not this time'. Do you remember which interview it was around Confield where he said that?

i know Gl0tch did some kind of fake for Draft 7.30, but i don't know of any Confield fakes. Although i'm sure they do exist because around that time period there were a lot of fakes being produced for highly anticipated albums. I remember when the Fragile was due out, i downloaded about 5 different fake albums until i found the real thing. When i downloaded Druqks (the real thing) i remember being sure it was a fake, now i know better.

well i think it was during a recent interview (oversteps??) that he said he put fake ones for confield if i remember correctly. Also fake album tracks (indeed the one to be released) are still REAL autechres ones if produced by ae but yeah there was a whole fake confield album back in spring 2001, cant remember which P2P was it (soulseek ? audiogalaxy ? napster ?). Well that's why i dont download anticipated tracks/album anymore, with Ae/AFX, the fakes ones were like everywhere..

i never heard about that 1998 Minidisc performance, the other Gescom one, (recorded & tagged as Manchester 2002 is a bit of a mystery to me)

yeah that Manchester one is the one i was mentioning above, went back and checked and it sounds drastically different than anything Gescom or Autechre has done. It resembles old school electronic music like David Tudor more than anything by AE or related

the manchester cathedral gig was wholly different to anything on record: seemingly random blasts of whatever was loaded onto each player's minidiscs (tina turner and meatloaf spring to mind). there were a LOT of minidiscs being slammed in and out so given the volume and the acoustics of a cathedral it was a pretty cacophonous set; short as well. i remember a deafening silence when the noise cut out, the performers stood up, put the gear in their lab-coat pockets and marched off stage. i forget which came first but either the performance was nothing like the minidisc release or the release was nothing like the minidisc performance. the gig reminds me now of what haswell's been up to for the much of the last decade so maybe he was the driving force behind gescom then. anyhow they were all dressed like a cross between the invisible man and lab technicians. plastikman headlined (consumed-era; no gimmicks) with graham massey/massonix, add n to x, mount vernon arts lab, atari teenage riot, luke vibert, komputer and various others playing as well. the flyer was a little illustrated booklet - and a transistor? - inside a clear plastic zip-lock bag, which i kept for years but it got lost along the way. below is the only press i was able to find:

http://www.aidan.co.uk/eyewitness-in-manchester/inthecity98/presscuttings/04shocktactics.html (no mention of gescom)

Thanks for the info, never heard about that gescom minidisc gig before. Regarding that other Gescom performance (2002 set in Manchester), i gave it a "spin" yesterday : it's good enough to be Gescom/Ae.. Kinda similar to the minidisc release also.
