Hey i saw this a long time ago but just now i remembered to ask here:

According the wikipedia article on SAW II http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selected_Ambient_Works_Volume_II tracks 5, 7, 8, 14 and 19 of SAW II, respectively Grass, Curtains, Blur, Parallel Stripes and Stone in Focus are heavily sampled in the Fallout 3 videogame.

I have the Fallout 3 soundtrack and i can't find any traces of them in there, but maybe i didn't listen with care. I have special intrest in listen Curtains, Blur and Stone in Focus since they are some of my fav tracks of all time from afx.

Can you help me on this one? Are they sampled on the game OST? If so? what are the songs? If not, can you link me them on youtube or smt if they are just on the game.

It was the music of the original Fallout not Fallout 3 - See/hear the video on the first post: http://forum.watmm.c...-to-aphex-twin/

Still i can't find those 3 songs i mentioned 'adaptations' for the Fallout series. If someone can find them for me i'll roll one for you!

I've known about this for a long time. I don't think they were actually sampled, but they were blatantly ripped off.

Yeah, the story goes that the composer was given a cd of songs that they wanted the soundtrack to sound similar to. The composer didn't know who the music was but some of it was Aphex. The OST sounded like Aphex because of this.

There will be new love from the ashes of us.

its rather hard to push the claim that ambient music can be "ripped off" based on melody...as sparing as it is, it comes as no surprise

plus I personally believe (I don't know) that as the composer mentioned, this was unintentional/harmless and AFX was used to influence his writing approach

hiphop guys biting each other's rhymes and beats, that makes sense to me.

Ambient artists ripping each other off just seems mindblowing.

actually I have noticed many a time whilst playing fallout how

A: fantastic the soundtrack is

B: much it reminds me of some of my favorite ambient artists

this reminds me of a track called 'loss rose' by kent sparling

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtBgcnV8Ztw

this one is always used in the most horrific places in the game...it makes me very uneasy

I can't say it really sounds like saw II tho

This comparison video is pretty damning. It's more then just similarity - the first few tracks are definitely copies of Grass and Windowsill in terms of melodic and percussive elements. Not sure why the video creator tried to compare the Journey remix though - that one doesn't sound similar at all. Sounds more like "Matchsticks" to me.

Yes, the story is that Brian Fargo gave some SAW2 tracks to Mark Morgan, the composer, who then proceeded to pretty directly replicate them. He probably didn't realize how well known Aphex was or was going to be, and figured no one would notice?

Some of these tracks made it into Fallout: New Vegas. I'd be really curious to see if RDJ or Warp knew about any of this.

This should also be noted:

  • 2 weeks later...

wtf the windowsill one isn't even close?

and if Morgan ripped off Aphex with Grass, then Aphex ripped off Steve Roach.
