I stumbled upon this recently, a video series by Chris Ott who has apparently worked for Pitchfork. He has some pretty strong opinions on music journalism and music PR both then and now.

The first episode that caught me was the one talking about how farcical the PR of Basinski's the Disintegration Loops really is, something that resonated well with my thoughts on it:

In the other episodes I've seen he talks about the birth of sampling, how labels did PR in the era of MTV, how they do it now, the role of pitchfork and other sites in promoting music etc. etc. It's pretty interesting!

He's very smart. He's also very jaded.

He's jaded, but not too jaded. And he's old enough that he talks about stuff that not many other people are touching on (or even remember). It would be unbearable if every video was like the Disintegration Loops one, but you can tell he really loves music. The episodes on Highlife, Boy George and Duran Duran are outstanding.

He's well-read on music and his videos are engrossing.

Can anyone think of anything comparable? Any other stand-out music video blogs ("vlogs")?

It's not that he's just well read on music. Like Lucy says, he's someone who has actually lived close to the pop music world since the mid 80s. He's very obviously jaded about his writing career and how he believes music magazines are just extensions of advertising, but it's obvious he's a genuine music lover. I love the episode about Lollapalooza where he explains how he taped MTV's 120 minutes (since he wasn't allowed to stay up that late) and recorded the audio on casette so that he could listen to it while mowing lawns when he was a teenager. And how when he saw Mercury Rev they were booted of the stage because they played so loud the band playing center stage became inaudible and how they lost that aspect after the second album yet music journalists today fail to notice what he means are "two different bands".

This is pretty much a "VH1" documentary about the history of pop music from the really subjective point of view of one really opinionated person instead of just a list of safe and biographical facts that those documentaries usually consist of. I don't even know or care about the music he's talking about half the time, but the stories he has because he has taken part in so much of it are really entertaining to listen to.

This man is a cry baby.

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

I don't know of anything that's on this level really. Making talking-head videos about this stuff is hard as fuck. You really have to be hyper-articulate to avoid boring the audience or coming across like a goofball.

I can totally understand that feeling, though I don't feel that way myself.
