Martyn appreciation thread

Martyn was one of those first non-DMZ/London scene dubstep producers I gravitated to. I don't listen to him as often as similar producers now, nice to relisten to some of those tracks you posted.

He's an ace remixer too, in fact I always check out anything he's remixed. Probably listen to those more than his newer productions.

first is my favorite...

^not a huge fever ray fan normally, totally dig this mix though

A guy like 2562 (Dave Huismans) gets much attention here on WATMM, and totally deserved. But I think Martyn is at least as good. And they are producers who strikes me as being very similar.

i don't find them similiar while comparing their recent output. but martyn deserves much love! good thread! great dj und amazing producer and his label 3024 brings pretty good stuff!

I've heard lots of good things about him, Scuba in particular has repped him a lot. have yet to dig into his material properly.

edit: I see these producers - Martyn, Scuba, 2562 - as all being part of the same circle

Great Lengths and Ghost People are two of my favorite albums in recent years.. check them out.

I don't know, I just get a very similar vibe from their music. 2562 might be a bit more techno influenced, whereas Martyn is a bit more Drum & Bass influenced.

They are also both from the Netherlands, that might be it.

They're definitely similar to my ears. Well, as similar as two musicians with a distinct sound can be.

I have to admit I couldn't really get into his latest album. I'll give some of his singles a listen, that usually works to rekindle my interest when it comes to dance music producers.

Same here. When it comes to labels there is a lot of crossover and consistent styling with those three and 3024: Hotflush Recordings, Hessle Audio, Tectonic, Apple Pips (Appleblim's post Skull Disco label), some R&S releases. And Planet Mu's releases of the same era too. I think even now in the "post-dubstep" world of future bass/future garage they still seem to spin each others productions. Basically all the second wave dubstep producers who came from techno/d'n'b and places like Brighton ("Purple" dubstep made by Joker and Hudmo, "aquacrunk" by Rustie in Glasgow), the Netherlands, and then the States before brostep emerged (FaltyDL, Distal, Matty G, Parson and plenty I'm sure I've forgotten). Apparently a scene called Skweee from Finland also latched onto the dubstep tempo/2-step rhythms, like this producer:

There was "dubstep" room that played all of this and juke, etc. on turntable.fm I'd always tune into at work last year. Definitely a concetrated "sound" for the most part.

^ true that, the whole Newspeak ep is on some heavy bangin house steez. Definitely my pleasant surprise of the year so far.
