Free software to rip .pls internet radio streams/convert to mp3

Recommended Posts

I'm running Vista 64-bit and I need a program to rip/download a .pls streaming file. It's this station in particular: http://129.116.109.155:8000/KVRX_192 One of my favorite DJs is leaving and I wanted to record his last couple of shows.

Tried Streamripstar but got stuck when I realized it won't record .pls files, only stream them.

Any suggestions?

u might have to steam it and record ur stereo mix on audacity

thats waht i do to rip off streams.

hope that helps god bless xxxxx

Yup. VLC is free and does this very well. It can just dump the audio data straight to a file so you're not damaging the quality of that low bit rate stream even further by transcoding or using some other weird lossy method.

...or get yourself a tape recorder;

Hah, I have three. My tape deck/turntable receiver's radio tuner is on the fritz. Also the last half of the show is on while I'm driving to and starting work, so I wouldn't be able to monitor the tape anyway. I rather just start the stream download and edit the mp3 copy later.

This is perfect - real straightforward! Tried it already and it maintains the 192kps and saves mp3 without a problem. I'll probably go with this but it's also nice knowing VLC was an option. I needed to download that and Audacity anyway, I used those often on previous computers.

Appreciate all the suggestions, saved me a lot of time googling and trying to figure out more roundabout solutions with programs I wasn't familiar with.

Intercept the packets with Wireshark and write an algorithm to manually parse the strings urself

That's how the real pros do it

(Or just use Orbitdownloader, not sure if that would work for .pls though, as they said it's probably best to just record directly off your soundcard into Audacity or similar in realtime. It can't be downloaded the same way as other streams like rmtp because you can't make requests, period.)
