Adobe Audition 3 released as freeware

How does Audition 3.0 compare with Cool Edit Pro 2.0 ? When did the series start to become uber-bloated (and IIRC have less features)

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

[uPDATE: 08/01/13] Adobe has officially stated that it is not giving CS2 away free after all. The apparent offer, made on Adobe's website, occurred due to a technical error. Adobe is deactivating its product activation servers for the CS2 suite and for that reason is making downloads and valid serial numbers available to clients who have already purchased a CS2 product. Apologies for the confusion.

Audition 3 is way more useful than 5 for me just because of the pitch bend feature (which was also in Cool Edit 2). I think there are more time stretching options as well. Good program for long glitchy timestretches and for making kick drums out of simple waveforms.

It's better in certain areas, the multitracking features are superior it has more complex spectral selection features (ie: adding an effect only to an area of the spectrum you select) but as far as it's effects algorithms it is far worse than Adobe Audition 2.0 or below (including Cooledit 2.0 and below). They opted to go for more 'real-time' effects algorithms farmed out from Izotope (who imo makes boring algorithms that arent really worth a damn). The awesome chorus effect, the time stretching and many others amazing unique Cooledit effects are totally missing since 'non real time' effects arent trendy anymore. Too bad too because a non realtime effect programmed with a lot of care will almost always sound superior to an equivalent designed for real-time use.

so is it better than Audacity or what?

significantly better yes, Cooledit and it's later iteration Audion are by far the best stereo track wave editor programs ever made. Only really Soundforge comes close.

Yeah I heard about the spectral manipulation thing, sounded really interesting. As I use CoolEdit just as a sample manipulation/cleanup/tweak thingy and never use the multitrack features looks like I'll stick with the classic Quistgard-enabled slimline editor for a bit longer then !

Just recently got the whole CS6 collection, including the latest Audition. Seems pretty solid, especially compared to the piece of shit Soundtrack I've been using for the past few years.

I only use Audition, but since I have a Mac I can only use 5 and 6, I still miss 3.

Pitch, Pan [plus its spectrum], the other spectrum I used sometimes, tone and noise generation [there is tone generation in 6, but for some reason it's hard to get it the way I want], Envelope isn't like in 3, neither is FFT, the annoying error in FFT when you spline the line and on the right the line goes right down to zero dB, and the bass he creates every time...

I think I just explained why 5 sucks hard and why I want 3 badly. [Or 6, but I don't want to buy it, it's way too expensive [if they'd make it around 100 euros then I'd totally get that shit]]

They should make an Audition app, then I'd consider buying a tablet so I can make music when I'm on the train or downstairs in front of the tv, I hate the fact that I always have to be in my small room in front of my Mac to make music.

They should also make an Photoshop app and some other Adobe software that's quite popular, would be great for a lot of people.

[i wanted to type some more, but I forget.]

Audition works pretty great on Windows 8 using touch screen tablet or laptop. Why would you rather a company focusing on making a crippled stripped down app when you can get a windows 8 tablet computer (a real computeR) for the same price as an Ipad ( a toy) ? not trying to be a dick just curious why more people arent moving in this direction

There is a Photoshop app. Another one called Adobe Ideas is good for illustration.

how stupid of adobe. I think making the old stuff free would actually be a fantastic product strategy. Give the people who will never pay anyways a free old version, and build some brand loyalty, then once they are hooked and want to upgrade they would be more willing to play fair and pay for a real version (which is absurdly expensive).

How fucking dumb.

I said tablet, not iPad per se. I don't like laptops, I hate them, they're too big to just carry around and the battery dies quicker than those of tablets.

You say you're not trying to be a dick, but you say that the iPad is a toy... please choose...

Also, I can't work with Windows, I hate it so much, that's why I bought a Mac a year ago, and it's still way better than anything Windows I ever had...

I agree on one side, but on the other side, people who did pay for it could get mad, because now it's free, even though they probably have new version already...

Adobe should lower their prices so that more people are willing to pay for the products, if Audition would be about 100 euros or even 150, then I would already have 6 on my Mac, now I have to 'wait' before I have enough money... [i already have the money, but not really sure if it's worth the money]

I've seen Cool Edit and older Adobe Audition mentioned both here and referenced elsewhere by other producers but still know little about it - is it more or less an essential beat-slicer/sample editor? I'm just curious what it's main appeal is and if there's any worthy equivalent (I'm using Ableton 8 and Windows 7 btw).

For me it's tailored nicely for dealing with individual samples or correcting issues. For many years I also used its tone generator as my primary synth, creating a few tones and then pitchshifting them. I think I was cooler then in some ways.

-The spectral editing tool is great.

-Nice pitch tools.

-The visual gain knob is nice for normalizing samples quickly.

-Decent noise reduction plugs.

-Flexible tone generator.

-Some decent FX.

in response to your post Joshuatix, if you havent had much experience with a 2-track stereo wave editor program Cooledit is a great place to start, but you may find that your workflow just doesnt have a need for it. I was sort of raised musically on the computer by using Cooledit and 2 track wave editors as the start of the chain, this is how i would chop up my field recordings or other samples i would take from records or other places. I would refine the shit out of my sounds using the built in effects in cooledit and then bring them into a real-time sampler VST or plugin in a proper sequencer. So its been essential to my musical workflow for quite some time. The other side of it is that Cooledit is just a wonderful and powerful sound design tool. Just the time stretching plugin alone (before Audition 3) is pretty magical, you can get insane tone clusters and textures from it that sound completely unlike any other effect i've used. It has a lot of bread and butter standard effects too but even those can be used as a crazy sound design tool. Like the chorus effect, you can type in the amount of voices you want and basically turn any sound into a weird granular noise evolving pad.

edit: pretty much everything A/D said. It's old noise removal algorithms (before the izotope algs used in version 3.0 and above) are unparalleled. The pop and click eliminator sounds cleaner, more transparent and effective in doing it's job than any pop click eliminator out there.

Adobe purchased the latest, non-shareware version (Cool Edit Pro v2.1) from Syntrillium Software in May 2003 for $16.5 million[1] as well as a large loop library called "Loopology". Adobe then changed the name of Cool Edit Pro to "Adobe Audition".

man if i was a billionaire or had this much capital to throw around i would fucking pay them 16.5mil just to have the honor of having the programmers make 20 new algorithms to do weird shit with. I'm not lying when i say that generally speaking capitalism breeds mediocrity. You can't simply compete by having the best product out there since most people will have no idea just how awesome cooledit is... ever.

Aye, the day CoolEdit fails to be compatible with my OS will be a sad day indeed (I had a worry when it gave an error whilst installing on Win7 x64 but it seemed to run all the same ...)
