Ringmod between 0:12 - 0:15 of Girl/Boy Song

Recommended Posts

I've always wondered if it's possible to 'reverse' a ringmod effect back to the original sound...

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Apparently so, yes.

I thought that was the case, and is exactly the process as Wall Bird suggests -

Ring modulation is simply a multiplication of the volume domain so all you need to do is divide it by the inverse amount.

This was the post I made about Steinvord for the segment that has ringmod'd vocals -

rind mod cancels out the carrier freq. the part you want to hear. you'd have to isolate the sum and difference frequencies to do anything. (im not sure what) and it sounds really busy with other noise in that sample

Well what I was thinking was you could do this reverse of this:

and instead of *~ at the end do /~ (or whatever it is on Max/MSP for dividing things) and just play with the modulation frequency until the modulation is 'cancelled out'

Anyone got Max/MSP to try this out ?

its probably just a remanent of the vocals used on the snare rush and redruth mixes

Possibly. The words used in Girl/Boy (£18 Snarerush mix) were reused in Come to Daddy (Little Lord Faulteroy mix), and were appropriately enough apparently taken from Little Lord Fauntleroy (not the book, and I have no idea which film based upon it). It wouldn't surprise me if the "flowers that bloom in the warmth of the sun" sample was taken from it, either, although I have no idea.

If I could figure out how to do the milkman reverse I'd try it out myself, can anyone skilled do this tiny fragment?

if you're talking about the intro to Milkman, I posted it a few posts above.

Simple and fun trick: a second pass through a ringmod sort of reverses the effect of the first one if done right.

Wow, is that really the way - By 'done right' do you mean running in through a ringmod of a specific frequency ?

Yes. I have'nt tried it in a while, but i did this on a soundclip and it negated the ring mod effect. I think this was the method used to decode the milkman skit.

The method I used was to put it through a few passes of the Harmonic Rotation filter in Bias Peak for the Mac. It took me about 4 or 5 passes to get it sounding how I did.

Do you know if the 'Harmonic Rotation' goes under another effect name. I've posted an audio clip in the Steinvord speculation topic in this subforum with a vocal sample that may determine the author - do you think you'd be able to 'un-ringmod' it using the same effect?

I honestly have no clue, and it's been a long time since I had a Macintosh to be able to use Peak

:(

Hmm. None of these ring demodulation methods seem plausible. I was hoping there was a way to do this in realtime but I think oscillik's offline method is the best bet for now.

I did find this http://www.hitfoundry.com/issue_07/mmm_mdem.htm
