Imogen Heap Demonstrates Body Controller

Recommended Posts

So here is this pretty great video.

I was grinning the whole time. The combination of the fucking cool technology, her sweet music, and her shy explanations are priceless. I know for you Reaktor heads the things she does to the music will be no great surprise, but the control method is so endearing. I would see more IDM live if they could all sing this well and dance this awkwardly the whole time.

Yay.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step - a theremin. (loljk)

That was a cool demo overall. She kind of piddled about the first seven minutes, but it got progressively cooler from there. I guess the whole idea behind it was to play music in a manner that requires the player to move their body, as opposed to just sitting in one spot and twiddling knobs (or mouse pointing-and-clicking). Probably the same idea on which the Nintendo Wii is based for gaming.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

Will watch the Imogen Heap video tomorrow, but I thought it would be appropriate to rep Onyx Ashanti in this thread. The blueprints for his hardware and the Puredata software he's created is open source and available to download on his website:

I've been curious about her music for a while, might check it out.

I'd definitely recommend I, Megaphone, Details (as Frou Frou) and Speak for Yourself. I'm a bit behind with music right now, so if she's released anything since then, I haven't caught up yet... Her music's wonderfully quirky.

fantastic. I really think this type of stuff will be what really bridges the gap in music production and music performance.

plus she's got my midi controller there leaning against the rack case. :)

Speak for Yourself was great, Ellipse didn't catch my attention as much, so I'm hoping she does something else next round.

My mate used to live next door to her in a tower block in Waterloo. She was a nice neighbour. Carry on.

Pretty dam cool.

Not much of dancer but I'd dance with midi motion controllers :D

I've heard of her years back but I never bothered to check her stuff out, that demo was aight. Hats off to her.

Imogen is so likable, humble, and gloriously awkward that she can demo this and make it seem like a great idea.

But just picture a guy who looks like machinedrum doing this. :cringes:

this kind of stuff would look cool in a futuristic tom cruise or bruce willis movie nightclub scene or something but i wouldn't wanna watch anyone prance around like that IRL maybe imogen heap can pull it off but this kind of act would get annoying after a couple years. 2 fancy 4 me

lol
