Derek (gervais)

Anyone finding this funny?

I've tried 2 episodes thinking maybe it'll click (didn't like the office straight away) but it is the opposite of funny. Gervais retardedly acting like a retard is painful to watch. And putting a wig on a 1 trick lucky break non actor does not make a comedy character. I'm blown away by this show's badness.

I watched the 'making of' and it looked like Gervais had gone insane, like Jacko pretending to be Jesus at the BRITS.

I watched the pilot and thought it was a pile of shit (and i love karl pirlkington so i wanted to like it). Gervais without Merchant can't do anything, which got me thinking that Merchant is the brains behind everything funny Gervais has ever done (kind of like how Larry David was the brains behind everything funny Seinfield did)

isn't this supposed to be a drama?

But yeah Gervais has really gone over the deep end; his career has been really nothing but a good string of flukes and it's been the others around him that have made that happen. We need Jarvis Cocker to give him a good arse waggling.

i'm a big fan, both gervais and karl, but yeah, the pilot didn't promised very laughs... oh well.

i like it.

pretty clear merchant was the brains behind everything. you can even hear his expressions in the office's script. gervais is just david brent, which is a great thing to have been, but move on already.

It's mawkish crap, I hate it.

i can't watch for more than a few minutes. that face gervais keeps pulling makes me want to punch him. it's david brent pulling a funny face, it's not a different character.

ive said it before and il say it again, extras and the office were great because ricky gervais was playing an utter cunt, which im pretty sure he actually is.

imagine if Gervais took over the Jerry Springer show. It would probably be some of the best entertainment on daytime TV. he should totally embrace his inner phony and do a daily daytime TV variety show or something

or he should be a contestant on takeshis castle.

Aside from Gervais' embarrassing impression of someone with a learning disability, it's the minor key piano soundtrack designed to wring empathy out of the viewer that grates with me. Plus the constant looking-down-the-camera-in-disbelief - that's something you can get away with in a mockumentary like The Office where it's implied there are cameramen present, but half of it's shot as a traditional sitcom with no camera crew. Oh, and that tosser who sits around drinking Special Brew talking about porn all day - I seriously doubt that kind of character would be legally allowed to work in an old folks home. All of these are minor points though - the main issue is Gervais isn't funny or clever enough to pull this off.

I think it might get some respect with age, though I also think Gervais is trapped in his own ego. He's too aware of being called comedy genius all the time.

I believe he does have this great edge that makes him funny, but lately he's not been putting it to much use. Especially the films seem boring.

I would sooner sound my urethra with AA batteries than watch Gervais caper around on my television for half an hour.

anyways, im kinda sad to hear that the show sucks. i was looking forward to seeing more Karl. but if its as bad as you all say it is then i think ill just avoid it completely so i don't think less of the dude (and i mean Karl. its not possible for me to think any less of Gervais)

Yes specially if you listen to the early XFM radio shows, so obvious even back then, Merchant is one witty guy. Gervais uses a lot of material "taken" from Karl too for the live shows, don't know what to think of that.

Moaning of Life should be good, it's just Karl Pilkington, no Ricky or Steve this time. For me the best bits of Idiot Abroad was when he was doing his own thing, hope it's more of that and less segments where it was just them trying to annoy Karl.

I watched the first and second episode of Derek. I have a strange feeling this will in time become very solid to me. I already enjoy the niceness, there's not much humor yet but I feel strange potential in this.
