North Korea vowed Tuesday to cancel the 1953 cease-fire that ended the Korean War, citing a U.S.-led push for punishing U.N. sanctions over its recent nuclear test and ongoing U.S.-South Korean joint military drills.

 

North Korea's Korean People's Army Supreme Command warned of stronger additional countermeasures in a statement that came amid reports that Washington and North Korean ally Beijing have approved a draft of punishing sanctions for a U.N. Security Council resolution responding to North Korea's Feb. 12 nuclear test. The draft is expected to be circulated at the U.N. this week.

 

The United States and others worry that North Korea's third nuclear test pushes it a step closer toward its goal of having nuclear-armed missiles that can reach America, and condemn its rocket launches and nuclear tests as a dangerous threat to regional security.

 

North Korea says its nuclear program is a response to U.S. hostility that dates back to the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty, leaving the Korean Peninsula still technically in a state of war.

 

North Korea warned it will cancel the Korean War cease-fire agreement on March 11, citing U.S.-South Korean military drills that began March 1.

North Korea has apparently re-deployed semi-submersible vessels along the de facto maritime border with the South and is priming coastal artillery for a major military drill.

 

A military source here on Sunday said commanders of North Korean frontline units along the Northern Limit Line have bolstered combat readiness activities centering on artillery units. "Artillery aimed at the South in Haeju and Kangryong has been primed and is undergoing constant readiness checks," the source added.

 

Another high-ranking military officer here said, "The entire North Korean military is preparing for drills and it looks like a big exercise is about to take place early this month." The officer warned North Korea could repeat GPS jamming operations soon against South Korean civilian aircraft and ships.

 

The North is preparing to hold the drill at the same time as joint U.S.-South Korean exercises, which started earlier this month and continue until the end of April. This has never happened before, the officer said.

 

The South Korean military is wary of North Korean semi-submersibles, which are equipped with two torpedoes each and are extremely difficult to detect. Gen. Jeong Sung-jo, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said during a visit to a naval base on Saturday that a North Korean provocation is "inevitable" and ordered troops to be prepared to repel the North's semi-submersibles.

 

Intelligence agencies here believe the latest moves signal a possible preparation for an armed provocation in response to tougher sanctions by the international community after Pyongyang's nuclear test and the joint U.S.-South Korean military drills.

Here's the thing. The threat is what's valuable; if they follow through they will be crushed. However, like a parent, our government has something of an obligation to take such threats seriously. I hope they don't trick the US government into becoming the aggressor. Such a pointless waste of life to go down that road.

I not too worried about. There were tunnels discovered in the 70s through 90s, numerous submarine deployed agents making landfall or attempting to (using mini-subs and semi-submersible craft), numerous border clashes including artillery shellings, a major terrorist attack in the 70s, various kidnappings of South Korean and Japanese citizens, etc. South Korea regularly conducts military exercises near the border itself. Hundreds have been killed in these incidents. The US and ROK are continuously prepared for invasion and is prepared not only for dealing with troops and vehicles with superior air and land weapons, but also for missile interdiction. If the DPRK strikes it will be quite lopsided in casualties. I can't speak for how a US-ROK counter-attack and occupation would shake out though.

i don't think this is a particularly wise thing to threaten the USA with, although obviously they do an awful lot of sabre rattling and nobody takes much notice... however the threat of a pre-emptive nuclear strike seems to be a step up from their usual bravado.

China calls for ‘calm’ after N Korea threats

 

Beijing - China called for “calm and restraint” on Friday after North Korea responded to new UN sanctions with fresh threats of nuclear war and promises to scrap peace agreements.

 

“China calls on relevant parties to exercise calm and restraint, and avoid actions that might further escalate tensions,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters in Beijing.

 

“The current situation on the peninsula is highly complex and sensitive” and China “expresses concern”, she said, re-iterating Beijing's longstanding position.

 

Beijing is Pyongyang's sole major ally and by far its biggest trading partner, including being its primary energy supplier, but voted Thursday for the UN resolution that stiffened sanctions against the North following its nuclear test in February.

 

“We believe the resolution is a balanced one,” Hua said at a regular briefing. “China is objective and fair on this matter and has played a constructive role throughout the discussion at the Security Council.”

 

China has always “seriously” implemented UN Security Council resolutions, she added, and re-iterated Beijing's call for a return to the six-party talks that bring together the US, both Koreas, Japan and Russia. The forum has been moribund since 2009.

 

Chinese trade and aid have enabled the government in Pyongyang to survive since the 1950-53 Korean War, which historians estimate killed as many as 400 000 Chinese troops.

 

In China's strategic thinking, North Korea is a “buffer zone” that prevents the 28 500 US troops stationed in South Korea encroaching on its own border.
