If I see 'Squarepusher: Ufabulum — track by track written by Squarepusher' again I'm going to delete internet.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

from all i know of sxsw it seems like a disjointed clusterfuck of a festival. im sure there's a bunch of cool "new" artists there but everything seems so scattered in multiple obscure little venues that seem like the whole experience would be a huge pain in the ass.

wtf is this? Not sure what you're trying to say with this... that it's not cool artists and instead just a bunch of hipster garbage? I listened to the whole thing but I can't say I cared for it.

it's crazy how much a young boy Rustie looks. Is that an old picture or is does he still look like that? I bet he gets a lot of ass looking like that, and i don't mean that sarcastically at all.

Guest igloos unlmtd

I walked down to the Flying Lotus thing at the Amoa last night since it was only a few blocks from where I live but the line (cue) was insane & totally not worth it.

We almost got hit by a 4x4 who didn't obey the right of way to pedestrians. The female in the passenger seat flipped us the bird as she was getting finger banged & felt up by the guy whose lap she was sitting on. Oh ya, the 4x4's speakers reeked of bro-step as it sped away.

It really is Spring Break MTV style this year. I get the feeling it's a lot of kids from Houston & Dallas...

I'm keeping my spirits up tonite for The Go from Detroit. I love their Howl on the Haunted Beat album but I've yet to hear their new one.

I have had a few good experiences in recent years. Probably the best was Jesus & Marychain last year.

I saw Flylo at SXSW in 2010 while he was promoting Cosmogramma at the official Warp show. I had volunteered during the Interactive portion of the conference (which was cool - got to listen to a lot of neat panels) and that was the main event I wanted to use my badge for. It was a great show - Hudmo opened (fun but predictable set), Eskmo played after with far more live use of MIDI in his performance, and Flylo closed out, doing a quasi-DJ set probably using Ableton. The crowd was pumped but not in an ignorant bro way, but most were there specifically to hear the music WARP was showcasing.

I'm glad I saw him then and there. 2010 was a preview of all the worst of SXSW - specifically my wife and I waited in line after lucking out and getting a "RSVP" to a show where Snoop Dogg was playing (some blogger named Perez Hilton hosted). We waited for hours and were the last group to get in - but this was after watching the venue have multiple entrances open on accident and seeing hundreds of people cut in line without any shame to get in. It was an absolute clusterfuck and I'm still shocked it didn't erupt into chaos. Compared to when I went to free shows from 2005-2008 or so it was a completely different experience - lines were enforced, crowds were a lot more chill, I even saw My Brightest Diamond and St. Vincent when they were unsigned play free shows to literally 5 or 6 people! People actually thrived off seeing new and unknown artists back then (as the festival intended!)

My apathy level toward SXSW is pretty high - the biggest "act" everyone keeps talking about is a myspace showcase featuring Justin Timberlake at a "unknown" venue. To which I say - FUCKING SERIOUSLY!? I'm actually glad I'm too busy with work. Every event that isn't a low-key free show or sincere official showcase or one of many overlooked non-corporate and/or charity-driven events, unofficial DIY shows, etc is a RSVP only show. These dominate SXSW and are the #1 cause of it's negative vibe now. RSVP shows have existed for years at SXSW but were originally one-off events, surprise shows, or massive public-oriented shows. Now almost every event of anyone remotely hyped is a RSVP show. Fader Fort (site of the infamous Salem show) actually makes it's own badges and the City of Austin has catered to the free whiny masses by throwing free shows at it's public outdoor auditorium, which in 2011 almost resulted in a riot when DFA 1979 played a reunion gig. Hipsters fucking tore fences down and cops showed up with horses and batons and only then the mob dispersed. A hipster riot almost occurred %5Burl=

When I moved here my first SXSW was in 2005, during the days when people actually paid for legitimate wristbands that would get you into non-day shows (which were free) and badges were literally only for the professionals who attended to event for work or were musicians and artists themselves. Broke students and working-class locals volunteered to get badges. It was much more democratic and all shows, free or showcase were mostly attended by music lovers. It felt like any good gig you'd pay for - only it was all day and all over downtown. Even when I went to a corporate show hosted by Scion (yeah lame, blah blah) in 2007 I got to see, without any hassle, Boris and Pelican and the Melvins (actually left early to catch another artist on the other side of town). Everyone there was there to hear music. No pics being taken by dozens of kids nor anyone who wasn't an actual metalhead was taking up space in the front of the crowd, being obnoxious and getting drunk off free beer. None of that. Now people actually PAYING TO GET RSVP LINKS AND TIPS making it pretty much self-evident that any show where RSVPs are desired are going to be full of superficial douchebags driven to attend for the hype alone. It's quite sad.

SXSW is just too much for me. I've outgrown it. I do think enough free shows go on to keep real music fans attending. In fact perhaps more than ever they might be worth going. If all the bros and industry fuckers are too busy trying to get into exclusive parties and hyped shows, the overlooked shows are probably the place to be. My friend's band is playing at a free show tomorrow - it's being hosted by a radio podcast show that usually plays ambient and drone. And get this - it's in Austin but no where near downtown. It should be great. %5Burl=

I went 06, 07 and 08. I realized at the end of the 2006 one that you have more fun just wandering around getting fucked up and happening onto certain shows or getting invited places. Rushing from here to there to see acts will leave you dissappointed and stuck in lines. I was usually just trying to find the party and spend the night there (or in my car which was parked right by that wendys by the 35 over pass at 5th of 6th street).

There was already a lot of sponsorship in 2006 and I remember hearing people moan about how it used to be more pure. But hearing of how it is now and friends in NYC paying for wristbands and travelling down there in 2013 sounds annoying. I'm surprised by the RSVP thing too. I usually didnt touch the internet during sxsw and that would have been shit

It's basically essential now. In fact I'd say for many events you're fucked if you don't have a smartphone (that goes beyond SXSW though and applies to other concert and festival tickets)

SXSW 2013 in a nutshell - hyped band trudging through it's third show, at it's third venue, in one afternoon/evening melting down as assholes in the audience, likely drunk off free booze they've been pounding all day, heckle them. This is what happens when gigs become meaningless and more often than not attendees actually don't give a shit about the bands they are seeing.
