Nope.

Leave the US.

Telecommunications companies are bastards worldwide, yes.

but they're quite a bit more fucked in America, eg: charging customers for sending and receiving texts / calls.

This doesn't happen in Europe.

also, the absolutely extortionate charges for data.

I'm with giffgaff and pay 12 quid a month for basically everything, it's awesome.

"They're about guns, lasers, robots with laser guns in space. Monsters from the future. Explosions. Sylvester Stallone doing a backflip on top of a spike while Robocop carries a ghost up a mountain. Bombs and swords and that... IDM is awesome."

it's cool here after some major reforms, about 25$ per month for unlimited internets/sms/phone calls with no obligations.

I'm in the UK, £16 a month = infinite texts, 500 free minutes and unlimited data

Rolling month by month contract, no minumum term, can stop at any time

I own the phone, its a sim only deal. I can tether.

I didn't even bother to shop around that much, there's probably better.

I think in the USA you can barely even get SIM only deals?

even though korea has only three Telecom companies, the situation is pretty good. probably due to the size of the country, so the infrastructure is great an there are no regional monopolies. 1GB data plans are about $30/month.

The carriers seem to do a good job of pushing out Android updates too. My ancient Galaxy SII has been on android 4.1.2 for a while now, which is the same as my mom's Verizon Galaxy Nexus.

My family pays 211 for 3 people monthly for 1000 minutes shared, unlimited texting and shared 2GB worth of Data. We are wtih verizon and have been getting fucked by them since the start. It is sad that this is considered normal and the lowest we have managed to set up with them.

Is there anyway around this? How much are other verizon customers paying?

ting sounds pretty cool https://ting.com/ but have not tried them

If this is for real, then this is an epiphany. I'm tired of paying $85/mo for my service.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

canada too lol. also, the idea of having long distance charges in such a big spread-out country are fucking shit

in europe they really are much better. you dont get charged for receiving anything. also if you have pay-as-you-go, the credit stays there forever instead of being stolen at the end of the month

I'm still amazed that I can throw my voice into a device and it sends it to someone else's device, no matter how far away I am.

MAGIC.

is this why they get away with ripping off americans?

No, they get away with ripping off Americans because they're all working together to keep the costs high. The old business model of lowering the price to tempt a potential customer doesn't work anymore. The companies know someone will buy their product no matter what, so they charge whatever they want.
