I'm glad. I was looking at the latest msPaint thread. Then it occured to me that it might be nice to muck around using my left hand to create a pic for the thread. So i tried to find accessories in the programs bit of the start view. Sure i'd read about how to get there in the past, but the way eluded me and i had the link saved in firefix (lol), so installed the overlay. Thanks to gord. Things are now where they should be, pre 7/xp/vista stylee (you have the option to choose whatever).

Funny how going back to classic is associated with "usability enhancements". Lets improve by going back. Is this digital conservatism? Ima bet yall all windows users are republicans.

Please ignore this post. Ima just f-cking around.

lol, couldn't figure it out? Did you try to tell the PC what it is you wanted? Just type in what you want at start, you would do the same on win7 or vista.

why type when you have a mouse ? couches and mice are the future right now, well until windows made a touchscreen OS and then forced the interface down the throats of PC users. (yeah sure i didn't have to install it on the htpc but that's another argument altogether. Anyway, i have my start button back, and when you lot upgrade, maybe you'll remember this thread and it's amazing suggestion.

Aye, been using it since Windows 7 and it's stellar. For those bemoaning Windows 8 - It isn't just the Metro UI (In fact for me I haven't seen it since the day I upgraded (for only $15) a few months ago): It's a bug fixed, optimised Windows 7. Nothing has crashed, it boots and shuts down on a dime (is that the phase?), the GUI draw speed and general performance definitely seems improved and yeah: Win8 + Classic shell = A bloody speedy, stable OS. Two thumbs fresh.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

because typing a query and getting a result in a second is faster than the 3-5 seconds it takes to move the mouse cursor to the Start button, click the Start button, and navigate the Start menu to find what you're looking for. Anyone who has used an AS400 system at work for any length of time would also be able to tell you that a keyboard driven UI is much faster and more efficient than a mouse driven one.

But choices are choices, and it's good that people have the choice to use an interface that they're used to and comfortable with. I tried Start8 when I first installed Windows 8 on my machine, but I quickly ditched it because the new Start screen actually is faster and better, and I only ever really used the older Start menu in the same way I use the Start screen now - by typing search queries and hitting Enter.

i know where all my programs/files are. It's such a quick way to dive down into a folder tree, from the start button. This other way doesn't compute for me. As for the start screen, bah i say.

Anyway, yes choices.

just downloaded and installed thanks to this thread. nace one delet!

like mcbpete said this is well thumbs.

And you know thumbs. ;-] heh ..

mcb - We have the OS on a solid state drive for even faster booting goodness. Drawback, is that i can't clutter then desktop with vids, cause of the lack of space on the C drive.

lol I always hear that or the exact opposite as an excuse and it always cracks me up. Whether you prefer the mouse or the keyboard, Windows 8 manages just as well if not better than any other windows OS to date.

In your case. If you right click in the start menu, you can select "All Apps" and Paint is right under Windows Accessories. Who'd a thunk it.

Of course its always much easier to install a third party app than learn the simple task of Right Clicking and/or Typing...

with a mouse and the old start menu it's more elegant. Maybe if you came to my house i could demonstrate what i mean. Sure i could do it your way, but don't be offended by my interpretation of your reality. I'm quite happy for you to keep on with whatever you're doing. Just don't tell me it's easier to do something that isn't. Perhaps either way could be seen as on par given each user's familliarity with each. But, pressing on the old start button then having menu trees open, or having something pinned to the start bar/menu, is way quicker for me than typing or scrolling across looking for the right tile whilst leaving behind the desktop where all my stuff is still open and active. This 'new' way, seems clunky and unnecessary.
