the Nord Modular Generation Game

Recommended Posts

I've had my Micro Modular G1 since moses was a boy and always loved and always thought that would scratch the Clavia itch for me. However, with the speculation that their announcement at Musikmesse next week might be a G3 Modular of some sort (which is kinda/very unlikely) it got me thinking about the Modular G2 keyboard. Started looking into it, watched that vid on Youtube from Stretta about the G2 keyboard and I'm almost thinking I've been fool for so long.

Anyone have experience of both the G1 and the G2 and care to offer some wisdom about how much I am or am not missing out on here.

Cheers!

No G3. There is a nord lead 4 teaser site. No images, just a sound file of a long evolving synth drone.

There will never be a G3. Too hard to market.

I have 2 G2s. They are my favorite synths ever. Clavia however is one of my least favorite companies for having such abysmal support for their editors. Some guy at elektromusic reverse engineered the editor so it will be future compatible. If that guy can do it in his spare time with nothing to go off of, they can put in half an effort and update their source code for their passionate users.

Never ever buying new from clavia again. If my g2s ever break I'll hunt them down second hand, but otherwise clavia will never see a cent of my money.

cosign on everything Kcinsu said.

clavia dropped the ball on the nord modular line twice. they abandoned the g1 & then they abandoned the g2.

some guy even discovered usable modules that were hidden in the synths firmware that clavia couldn't be bothered to finish after all these years!

no support. no bugfixes. nothing.

it would be one thing if clavia was a struggling company on the verge of bankruptcy or something but they are doing quite well selling their other boring synths. they could easily afford to support the g2 if they wanted to. compare the support of a small company like dave smith instruments with clavia... it's like night and day. a company that demonstrates such a blatant disregard for their customers will never see any of my money.

to address the thread starter: the nord g2 is lightyears beyond the g1. you can download the manual and see all the extra stuff in there. if you have the opportunity to get one used, do it.

man...

the art school i'm studying at... there's this little studio / rehearsal room thingie... a variety of folks have access to that room... lots of stoner jam sessions happening which is fun...

well there's also a G2 flying around there, apparently some professor bought it some time ago. People use it all the time. It's just.. there are basically only the factory patches installed... nobody except maybe 2 or 3 persons even know what you can do with this thing... so people mostly hammer away at the factory patches zapping through them like watching cable TV....

each time i see this, i'm really worried that the G2 will crap out sooner or later because of bad handling... or that it will just disappear because someone needs cash...

Well if I had the moneys, I would try to buy it off the school and replace it with a microkorg or something....

yeah, totally agree with clavia's bs support. the beta osx software i have to use for the g1 is completely awful. i guess clavia just thinks not enough people are really using it or something? idk

i will say, however, that while the g2 really is an incredible synth, a lot deeper than its predecessor, the g1 imo is still an amazing instrument unto itself. i've had mine for about 10 years and i while i certainly lust after a g2 i definitely don't feel held back by the g1 or something.

basically, they're both fucking awesome.

there's a bit of debate surrounding the G1's warmer sound next to the G2's more precise hi-fi tone

I had a G1 sold it then got a G2 engine but the sound didn't grab me and I sold it for a lot more than I paid then I ended up picking up another G1 rack expanded and I'm happy with it.

for me the harsher digital tones and squelchy resonance sounded more organic on the G1 but I've never had them side to side to make a proper comparison, sure others have compared patches but not really with the type of sounds that set them apart also there's a lot more user patches out there for the G1 when it was king before softsynths

the gene style ramdomizer, advanced morph groups and external MIDI I do miss on the G2 but I found the extra delay/reverb FX were a waste of time

Thanks for the input all... something to mull over. As for the new NL4 and the NordDrum2 they've announced today.... sounds okay and maybe even interesting until you see the price. Eye watering.... the first NordDrum was pretty reasonably priced but the single output put me off. This new one adds an output a couple of extra voices and doubles the price.... jings!
