Aoki Takamasa - RV8

previews sounds promising

i can see how it sounds like standard r-n in some ways, but i think r-n has been broadening their sound recently with some excellent releases. the grischa lichtenberger and vladislav delay albums, and the emptyset ep, in particular; they make sense on r-n but don't sound like classic r-n to me

Fucking hell, those are great samples. I love this sound of beats having room to breathe without too much else going on, very hypnotic. Will keep my eye on this.

Is earlier Takamasa similar/worth checking out?

His first raster-noton release Rn-Rhythm-Variations is very similar. Another one is Monad IX. Out of albums I would say the closest is Parabolica. He was always like that since 2001, sometimes shifting to more pop elements. I guess he's not that known only because he published his music almost exclusively in Japan.

I started a thread to discuss aoki takamasa a while back, but only a few people chimed in. He has put out so much god stuff - I don't think i've been as excited to listen through an artists career discography since Autechre.

kes is my favorite from silicom

Needless to say, I'm excited for this upcoming album, and the new videos are groovy yet hypnotic :music:

i've listened to this album a bunch in the past few days, and it is really good. it kind of reminds me of tri repetae.

my main complaints are that the vocal samples are out of place, and occasionally the album sounds too much like generic early millenium glitch, but those problems are both infrequent enough to ignore.

If you're in the UK:

I don't know how, but Sainsbury's Entertainment have got a lot of the Raster Noton CDs for £10 - quite a lot cheaper than a lot of stores out there. Here's RV8.

@ dlo you're right, just a few singles and remixes.  He regularly updates about live/dj events, but only in japan for the most part.

Reflects, a 20m track he did for a fashion show, is definitely worth tracking down.

But yeah, i'd also be stoked on a new album, I still spin and listen to RV8 regularly.  Rv03, one of the slower tracks (and sadly not on the vinyl) is great listening while on a walk.  The bird sounds in there compliment the beat so nicely

apart from this and REFLECTS there hasn't been much output from him unfortunately

i messaged aoki takamasa on SoundCloud a couple years back on if he'd do full releases of the limited CDs he did for a.m. show window (the samples on his SoundCloud are so good), and the plan was apparently to release those eventually but I guess nothing has happened since
