Prepping for an official release?

My good peoples,

I am about to release an EP on a label started up by my friend. I'd like those of you whom are very experienced in the professional matter to educate as to copyright registration...in other words, is it worth it for a netlabel release? How much does it cost? Is there any other way to retain some sort of legal presence in a (unlikely, but still) emergency?

In other words, im a fucking idiot and want to figure out how it all works.

lol, realized the beauty that is creative commons licensing.

mods, feel free to close this, or leave it open so that the masses may mock me.

i did a copyright registration for some stuff like over 10yrs ago. it wasn't tough at all, just had to fill out a paper i printed out, not a whole lot of details. sent in a cassette tape i believe, and it was around 30$

obviously it could have changed some.

as far as how much you actually may need to do it, thats kind of up to you to decide. basically all you're really doing is placing a copy of your work in the gov's hands which you can point to as proof that you made it first if someone else tries to profit off of it later. it may be unlikely that someone would do that, but if you put a lot of time into your stuff (and i can tell you did from the track you let me hear last night), it might buy you a little piece of mind. i don't really know much about the creative commons stuff but it might be adequate for your needs.

looking forward to the ep, btw!

I'm in the same boat. I'm about to release some music through a record label. I'm not worried at all about them taking anything of mine, I'm just worried about someone trying to pass off my hard work as their own.

Can you file a copyright over the internets? I don't have a printer.
