Remapping keyboard to send midi program change messages in Logic

Recommended Posts

I'll be playing a gig soon using Logic. I want to be able to switch between songs without titting around closing and opening projects with my keyboard and trackpad, so I bought Fluqe's OnStage app which allows you to create a Logic project setlist then switch between them when it receives midi program change messages.

Only problem is my little Akai LPK25 keyboard can't send program change messages via midi, and I don't want to go out an buy a new piece of kit if I can do it using the software.

So my question is: can I somehow remap the keys on my midi keyboard in Logic so they send out program change messages? So far I've created a midi track that outputs to IAC, which OnStage is listening to - I just can't figure out how to get Logic to convert a note to a midi program change.

Yep, I know it's not really the forum for this kind of question but I'm hoping there are some midi/Logic wizards among WATMM's EKT. Thx.

Most of things you want to do can be accomplished using Logic's environment mode. Although how to go about it is sort of beyond my skill level. I'm still struggling with ways to have Logic's software instruments respond to program changes ie: using an external midi keyboard with a prg change button/slider to switch presets in Sculpture

the 'environment' mode in Logic is what hardcore logic users have sworn by since the program implemented it. IT basically in essence makes Logic all together more powerful configuration wise than any other daw in existence, besides Abelton which has sort of it's own more straight forward customizing methods (macros, midi/key mapping layers). So if you're a Logic user and you mostly stay inside it, I highly recommend learning as best you can the environment mode.

Using environment was one of the possible solutions for my problem, but it was just too much to get my head around. I almost got there, by adding the transformer object to the midi input and converting the message - but I'd have to have done it for each project, plus it didn't make sense to receive a midi message, send it out, only to be sent back in again. I can see the potential of environment though, and will be toying with it on future projects.

I spent a good 2 years trying to crack the environment, only to give up in the end. haha. It's just not at all intuitive. The idea is great, but the implementation is awful. I could never even figure out how to use layers correctly. Meh. Now I use Reaper and I'm completely comfortable with it after like 6 months.
