Guitar pedals? MXR/Arion/Boss/Digitech/Cheap chinese copies

Picked up a MXR 100 Phaser about 6 months ago and have enjoyed using it.

Solid metal case, only two knobs but there isn't a need for any more, one is a four way switch that affects the range and the other is an lfo with quite a nice range that sounds good.

It's quite nice for sprucing up single osc pads but it has a strange quality of making you want to puke up if you listen to it for too long. Might be something to do with the lfo speed and brainwave patterns hehe?

A few years ago I owned a Boss PH2 phaser and the problem was that the sound wasn't gated, a wooshing sound would bleed through the whole track. This MXR is clean and won't make a sound unless you play something in. Doesn't seem to be any impedence issues, it was designed for guitar or keyboards.

Does anybody have the other MXRs like chorus or flanger? Was wondering how they are, they seem to have a lot of control knobs, wondering how flexible the sound is. The chorus would be for making string sounds. The flanger for, hehe, flanging.

What about the Boss pedal digital reverb? It has control knobs, so might be more useful than one of those quadraverbs where you have to mess about with buttons and presets. Is it suitable for keys and does it have a nice sound when used with a synth?

EDIT: the reverb pedal's name is Boss RV 5

Guitar pedal wise, I just have a Boss DS-1. It's a nice way of dirtying up an acidline (or anything else for that matter) if you like your music upfront and nasty. I still find it a bit offputting having to wire up a separate effects unit in the chain, preferring as much immediacy to patching as possible, but right now I'd even have that problem with a rackmount unit so it's hardly a reason to avoid guitar pedals.

I guess you should use whatever you like the sound of, regardless of what it was intended for or whether other people think it ought to be good or not. When I was a teenager, I had great fun running a digital drum machine with a resonant digital filter through a cheap distortion pedal. The way you could hear the filter stepping sounded nasty and good to my ears at the time, so it was a good fit for me.

I have this one... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E3ghp-w3ls... it rules.

It is great on a bass guitar. You sound like Debbie Googe from MBV.

I also have this one... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7-ss1fk5YQ... it's ok.

It has a buzz in it that has been there since I got it, maybe 20 years ago. I was too big of a wuss to exchange it.

I also have a Dunlop Crybaby Wah. That is a must-have. I also have agraphic equalizer peddle and a tuner pedal.

I wish I had more, but I don't really rely on the pedals too much. To me, it's all about the amp.

Somewhere else on this forum we were talking about all those DOD distortion pedals and how much character they have. I have the Corrossion pedal (which is actually physically designed so that it corrodes over time). It is hands down the most gnarly pedal I've ever heard. I put my 101 through it and crank up the 'rust' and it actually sounds like the signal is rusted over. Beautiful thing.
