Under the dome (TV series)

Did any of you guys watch this last night or read the book?

I'm not a fan of Stephen King in general but someone lent me the book so I read it (reluctantly) it was a pretty good read, some good protaginists and several interesting sub-plots. The TV show was actually pretty decent in my opinion. I think the casting for Big Jim was spot on although I excpeted someone more obese.

Anyone else follow the show?

Ah, I remember hearing about this and thinking it could have been an excellent new take on the bubble-town device.

I'll check it out.

Edit: Oh, it's only one episode in, so I guess I'll keep checking it out. I've needed something to keep me busy before Breaking Bad.

what, it started already? i loved the book (the ending was meh unfortunately) and was looking forward to the series, though not enough obviously.

it looks like they're replaying the pilot on sunday night.

i heard about this on the radio, i thought it was a reality show.

I'll let the dialogue off as it's a pilot and it's trying to introduce 20 characters as well as have them deal with a fantastical event.

But fuck, the acting is pretty poor.

yeah, just saw this last night. the acting was pretty bad lol. but it looks like it could be good. havent read the book, though i havent really read any of King's books. but ive liked just about all his tv adaptations of em. if anything, itll be a nice to have another new thing to watch this summer along with Burn Notice and Breaking Bad.

Yes agreed the acting was a little poor when compared to shows like breaking bad. I think Big Jim has potential though and Barbie was okay. It's tough to judge on one episode as Gary C pointed out they introduced so many characters and established the premise in 45 minutes.

I think the show will be worth watching though if nothing more than a reminder of the book.

Also agree ending of the book was DUMB as fck.

There was one part in the book where Big Jim gave his views on global warming, terrorism, religion and other controversial subjects that made the book worth reading IMO.

as with everything stephen king does, this is a rip off, this time from an outer limits episode and an episode of night visions titled a view through the window

well- simpson's was doing a parody (which is usually interpreted differently) but i don't understand how king has never been sued (or has he?)

with all that said i really loved 3 stories by him: the long walk (as robert bachman), the langoliers and the stand

The event that happened in the book 3/4th into it should have been the end. That would have been a gigantic FU to the reader.

Anyways... 11/22/63 is better and would be a better TV adaptation.

how is everyone feeling about this show now? i like the story and the tension and pacing is good but the bad acting kinda made me loose attention. that girl cop is the worst

is it as bad as revolution? or falling skies? i watched a trailer a while back and it seemed like the only interesting/fun part was the dome coming down and cutting cows in half and what not. the rest seemed like any standard MSNBC show/soap where everyone's a photo model and no one gets dirty, ever. or if they do it's really nice clean looking dirt. and where the high school jock actually isn't such a bad guy after all and the fat kid is really funny and likeable and every female character is completely fucking useless except when it comes to taking care of the household and telling the husband to be careful out there. /rant

actually in this show the high school jock is like an evil person and his plot thread is the creepiest thing about the story

i gave up on both revolution and falling skies after a couple episodes, i didn't make it past the pilot for defiance either. I actually like Terra Nova as shitty as it was but they cancled that one go figure.

you liked it? i found it laughably terrible. why would humans go back to the time of the jurassic period when it's now believed that a giant meteor killed all the dinosaurs and radically changed the climate on earth? wouldn't that be basically just sending them to their deaths?

btw: do you know the only reason it even lasted as long as it did was because fox bought the entire season from the box. by the 3rd episode, the show was doomed, but they had to keep airing it to make back the $4million per episode budget

you liked it? i found it laughably terrible. why would humans go back to the time of the jurassic period when it's now believed that a giant meteor killed all the dinosaurs and radically changed the climate on earth? wouldn't that be basically just sending them to their deaths?

 

i don't think they time traveled but went into a parallel time stream, like an alternate universe, because they were desperate from having bad living conditions.

it would have been cooler if they were an amusement park company who went back in time so they could assemble and launch a prefab franchise space station during the jurassic period that would be like a hotel for rich people who wanted to time travel and go on high tech dinosaur hunting expeditions

Bad Stephen King adaptations are usually great fun, but this is a bit too competent to be enjoyable. I'd hoped for something truly abject stuff like The Langoliers and The Stand.

i thought it was terrible initially, but last week's (7/22) episode was quite a bit better i thought. i haven't watched tonight's yet. i'm still not sure how they're going to keep this up as a series, a mini-series would be just right it seems.

i really hope they diverge even further from the book, knowing how the book ends makes pretty much everything cringe-worthy.

how the fuck can a series like this get a 2nd season? I guess they just will expand the first two-thirds of the book into new storylines, before things go toasty? They'll keep that for the end of the series, when ratings start to drop?

those are the only two stephen king movies-for-tv that i own and love them both (the langoliers more just because of the cast and getting stuck @ an airport plus the stand was just really long)

Up to Ep3 right now. The dialogue is unforgivable. The acting is poor, but fuck, they can't make anything good of this stuff.

I get that it wants to go slow and make intense characters, but fuck, get onto something interesting about the dome already.

Oh man, I always get sucked into The Langoliers when it's on TV. So 90s and the creature things are some strange looking CG.

I have the book but didn't really get very far into it, pretty much at the beginning of shit happening still... I got distracted by other things at the time I was reading it and kinda forgot to back to it. I should do that soon.
