Okay, nerds: Who bought themselves the Ouya?

Recommended Posts

I've got a Raspberry Pi for my emulator-on-the-tv needs and an Android phone for my portable .apk needs, so the Ouya is definitely not one for me. I can't really see it doing too well for either the casual market nor the geeky hacker type

But hey, maybe I'll be proved wrong.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I was wondering when Apple would start targeting gamers...Steve Jobs is very obviously dead.

edit: Ouya sounds fucking brilliant, btw.

post-edit: Not from a gaming standpoint, but from a marketing standpoint to drive down prices of established console names.

Brilliant on paper (like communism), but in reality, having a sub-standard console only able to run essentially browser/phone games won't last long, and won't do nothing to drive down console prices - the consoles (well, at least Sony) are already adopting the "indie" model, so that will eventually kill projects like this by offering what they do as well as the AAA games console owners expect.

Spot on the nose.

All the Ouya is good for are tinkerers and geeks, and those who want to dabble in game development themselves. But there are much better platforms available to a would-be indie games dev, the PC being the biggest and best platform for them. the major consoles are very quickly catching up to the indie haven that is the PC, and for obvious reasons - they need to.

I concur - the PC has been a haven recently for some really innovative titles that has made the console manufacturers stand up and notice - hence the whole Playstation Mobile initiative, etc. They all know once Apple decides to turn AppleTV into a game console, they're going to have a major competitor borne overnight on their doorstep (before Apple was only threatening them in the mobile space).

I have absolutely no interest in playing a game on a pc

cool story, bra

I was thinking of buying this so I could run the emulators. I have a Wii and on it I mostly play games on emulators so I mostly just need some box that can run them. Of course I could play with a laptop running an emulator put it isn't really the same as a console with controllers. And Ouya is pretty cheap for that purpose.

Modern games are just 2future4me.

I heard the more demanding emulators (like an N64 emulator) run like shit as of now.

They run like shit on the Ouya? I would imagine so, with it's outdated Tegra 3 processor.

For the PC emulation side of things, it all comes down these day to how good your graphics card and how good the emulation software is in terms of how close to the actual hardware it runs.

My 2011 MBP can run the Dolphin (Wii) emulator pretty well despite not having a dedicated graphic card.
