Building a Synth in Reaktor Question

Recommended Posts

Guest Hanratty

This is a question for anyone who's done some building in Reaktor. I am attempting to dip my toe into this area, and I watched a few youtube videos on the topic about building synths from the smallest elements. But I really want to use this set of modular pieces called Ampere Modular, made by Chet SInger. It is a collection of, I guess you'd call them Macros, that are all modeled after the Nord Modular G2.

My problem is ridiculously dumb, but still it is a big problem until it's fixed, and here it is:

I can't connect an envelope macro to an oscillator macro, so I just get a constant flow of sound.

If I use a very simple oscillator, I can find the hole labeled 'amplitude, or A' and plug the envelope into it. But on a cool oscillator macro, there is no such place to plug in the envelope. Do I have to create it? I don't know.

RTFM?? read the rules? yes, i know, i know. I'm sorry. But if you can easily answer this I'll be forever grateful and will pray to the modular synth gods on your behalf.

could you route the audio out of the patch to an envelope macro if there's nowhere to link the osc to env by amp? I only know small amounts of Reaktor-ness and I have only messed with the ITB macros where you do the easy connection to amplitude off the osc macro...

It depends on what you have to work with (I'm not familiar with the macros you mention)…

- if you have any envelopes with audio inputs, you can route the oscillator into the envelope

- if not, if you have any envelopes with audio-rate (black dot) outputs, you can route that output, along with the osc output, together to a math multiply

In the case of Ampere envelope macros it's designed with L and R in and out to route audio through. Only use L in and out if you don't want two channels. Look at how he's got it set up in the sine cluster example instrument.

Ascdi's multiply method would work too, using the usual Reaktor modules. But on Ampere everything is scaled 0 to 10 "volts" so the envelope "out" ports should only be used on macro inputs with black dots in the Ampere collection.

i'm not certain what your level of Reaktor experience is, but have you tried making a basic subtractive synth with purely modules? I rarely ever use macros when i make stuff. Occasionally someone will make a cool one that I'll try. The problem with macros is they follow rules that are inconsistent with other people's macros. I can check out those specific modules though, i have them but never tried playing with them.

thanks for the tips. I looked at the sine cluster ensemble and it was helpful, and I got a basic synth going using these Ampere macros. But then I immediately hit a new wall, stuff that seems like it ought to work, doesn't. I should just read up a little more before asking more questions.
