Madlib and Freddie Gibbs - Pinata

Finally! I'd been hearing that they had made enough music together to put a whole album out but wasn't sure it would ever get released (I've lost count at how many albums Madlib says he's done that never showed up). If this is anything like the first two EP's it will go hard.

From Rappcats.com:

"Madlib and Freddie Gibbs are finished with their collaborative album, Piñata, which is slated for release later this year. Guests on the album include Raekwon, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, Domo Genesis, Joey Bada$$, Ab Soul, BJ The Chicago Kid, Meech of Flatbush Zombies, Casey Veggies, Mac Miller, Polyester the Saint, G-Wiz."

For the uninitiated. From the 'Thuggin' and 'Shame' EP's.

So this delivered like a mofo. Some of madlibs coolest beats and gangsta Gibbs spitting pure flames like there's no tomorrow. Worth the wait

You really think so?

I like some of the beats, but find Gibbs rhyming really grating and non-substantial. Monotone delivery and uninspired lyrical content. A taste thing surely...

That is to say, I actually like Gibbs' delivery at times (Thuggin' is probably his best flow from what I've heard), but his insistence on overuse of the aforementioned word in the above image makes him come across like a badly thought out Jesse Pinkman tribute act.

omg frieddy gobbles is such a "i'm a true thug gangsta"

Too gangsta for watmm. Recorded in logbook

It's not what you rap about but how you rap about it, and Gibbs is great at this kind if thing.

Don't know much about Freddy Gibbs but I'm always gonna check out Madlib's stuff. Not that into the street cred gangsta rap either but after one listen I liked it enough that I'll play it again. I noticed I liked the second half better than the first, maybe I like the guest rappers better. We'll see with more listens.

Not really imo, Gibbs is really basic with the (gun) bars, authentic no doubt, but nothing lyrically worth rewinding for to my taste. Idle chatter on top of Madlib loops. Maybe it is because of tough guy saturation, but at the moment I'm checking out a lot of battle rap league's where rappers tear down each other in acapella battles. The gangster swag is like the amen break, a jazz sax solo, rappers riff on the theme and some flip it more creative than others. I prefer creativity I guess, though think you have to judge music as is not based on prejudice, this release is leaving me cold.

To each their own. His flow and delivery and voice are pretty good. And most guys who rap over madlib beats are more loose and off kilter with their flow, so to hear someone go as hard as Gibbs over madlib is really nice. He actually locks into the grooves

BANGER! At least in my book, love Madlib, particularly dig it when his productions get raw, rude and rough. This album really hits the spot, Piñata is my favourite tune so far but that's just because I'd already become familiar with the singles released prior to the album.

Looking forward to catching these guys among others at Soundset this spring. Madlib in a live setting will be dope, hopefully he does some extra beat interludes.
