Help me choose the music for my wedding

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I'm getting married this December, and one of the few jobs I've been given by my fiance is to work out what music we will have at the various different points in the day. It's a real nice job to have, but it's proving surprisingly difficult to know where to start. We will need music for:

1. The ceremony - waiting for the bride, the bride's entrance, during the signing of the marriage register and as we leave the ceremony

2. Over drinks and canapes on arrival at the reception venue - for about an hour

3. During dinner and speeches - for about 3 hours

4. Over post-dinner drinks - warm-up to evening partying

5. Evening disco - for 4 hours

Clearly I realise this is going to be a lot about personal choice, but I was hoping you guys could inspire me with some less obvious choices that will still have universal appeal to all our family, friends etc (7 hours of the IDMz is not going to cut it).

Cheers dudes!

Ae - Yuop (on repeat)

Ae - Perlence subrange 6-

Yasunao Tone - Solo For Wounded CD

4. Over post-dinner drinks - warm-up to evening partying

Brian Eno - anything will do really..

5. Evening disco - for 4 hours

Oneohtrix Point Never - Nobody Here

This is only time I can offer this advice: If you hire a country-western band, be advised that if they cover "Baby Got Back" it will sound remarkably eerie, apparently the main riff is in a minor key.

Personally I would pick a lot of Stars of the Lid.. Seems fitting for something like that.

^Good recommendations in there, especially up to the "partytime" portion of the wedding.

I don't think there's anything wrong with top40 or classic/well-known hits being spun by the DJ, maybe along with uplifting or upbeat house or techno or well, anything you can dance too.

As for the ceremony itself, I can't imagine anything except an instrumental song being used. We used Debussy for our ceremony and our first dance was to a Nick Drake song and they were songs we specifically wanted. I've heard some godawful lyric based songs used in wedding ceremonies and with one exception (a Catholic wedding with appropriate and pretty singing) it just seems so...cheesy. Just remember it's about you two and you two alone (but mostly your fiance of course  )

I used to make playlists for a coffee shop in my hometown. I'll send you a zip file of some of the best tracks from those playlists. Most of it is very chilled acoustic, electronic etc., but there's some old odd ball jazzy stuff in there as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, in particular Squee for the zip file!

No problem :)
