Post examples of elegant or poorly designed software

I've really come to appreciate well designed software lately. Like any IDM snob I can hardly tolerate crap anymore.
What are some of your favorites? What do you think is pure shit?

I'll start:

I have to use MS Outlook at work, and it's not very enjoyable. Of all the Microsoft products, Excel gets the job done fairly well. I have to wonder how it would stack up against alternatives if it weren't so popular in work environments.

Apple's OSX is enjoyable but I must admit Itunes is nothing like what I look for in a media player. Perhaps in the context of OSX it works much better and is somehow more appropriate but players like Foobar or Clementine are wonderful.

Reaper, I mean it used to be a lot smaller when I started but even now the installer is under 10mb:

Also whilst still on a musical note (pun only partially intended) Jeskola Buzz which also has less than a 10 mb installer:

As for poorly, well it's a little unfair as it's not been used for over a decade but -

I've been using emacs for the last 14 years..

Used to write tons of stuff in texmacs (my thesis for example):

Alpine for email. It's wonderfully fast over SSH with slow internet connection when compared to webmail.

I would swap the Foobar design for Winamp 2.9x anytime. Even if Winamp lacks the playlists tab (which IMHO is the only enviable feature of the Foobar).

Otherwise, I vote for Total Commander! I mean just look at that beauty of stability, usefulness and flexibility:

Open Office is great, and it's free.It replaces Microsoft Word or Excel and a few others.

Nobody uses Open Office anymore, they have migrated to LibreOffice

When it comes to audio software/plugins, some of the most elegant designs IMO :

Aalto1.3.png

Madrona Labs Aalto : my very fav one, such a clever and beautiful GUI (an animated GIF would be even better to show how nice it is)... and an equally amazing sound quality / palette. I'd love all my (audio) softwares to look like that !

ValhallaVintageVerbV1_0_0.png

All Valhalla DSP plugins, and they get better and better when it comes to design (and all sound fantastic, especially for the price).

XCode is the most elegant IDE I've used (for almost 2 years). Coming from MS Vistual Studio I hated it at first, but after few months it became my favourite. Still, it has some flaws, like poor multimonitor support.

screenshot_Unity-3D_abbe-b5a2c62669af.jp

Unity 3D has the best scene editor ever, much more user friendly than Unreal Engine 3 or any other game engine.

Weird how deeply aesthetic text editors can get. When I'm sitting in front of some full-screen off-white-on-black text editor with perfectly anti-aliased and sized text- with the perfect typeface- it makes me want to type some 17,000 page novel. If I'm drinking coffee and smoking up after a hot shower- sitting in a cool and dry AC'd room- I don't even have to type anything. I can just stare at the screen, and the app reaches some sort of perfection.

I sort of wish DAWs could be like this, but due to the nature of the beast, they will always be cluttered as fuck. There's no way to have tons of automation tracks on dozens of synth/sample tracks look clean and elegant, whilst maintaining at-jo-fingertips functionality (not having to hide and show things). If this is possible, it'd be a treat to see, but it probably requires a total rethinking on how this shit works on-screen.

Luckily, I can't think of any shit UIs, which is prolly cuz I generally don't use software that sucks shit. Actually, I guess Windows 7 has some minor problems, but.....
