hey i've got bitten in the upper calf by some bug, probably an especially nasty horsefly or something, a few days ago..

it's quite a big red spot where the sting/bite is, which is a bit itchy and somewhat hard to the touch.. which i could live with.

but now my right foot is swollen like a motherfucker, noticed this yesterday afternoon.

it's slightly less swollen now, but i'm just out of bed. gravity will likely increase the swelling again.

i've never had anything like this before.

i'm not oversensitive to insect bites, usually.

wat do?

Go to the Doctor please. This does not sound like a small thing so better to be safe than sorry.

Well you are lucky I used to be a St John Ambulance first aider so I will tell you to rest it, elevate it, and put ice on it please.

Horsefly is probably correct, did you notice the bite at all? Did the wound bleed initially, right after the bite?

The horsefly's biting-apparatus is shaped like a V, they can align the two stings so that they're parallel like this II, they puncture the skin with the two pointy ends, then sorta rip it open by letting their mouth-parts get back into their V-shape ... pretty nasty. This creates a rather large wound, which they need as they lick the blood as it runs down rather than suck it out.

It's usually not dangerous though, as long as it doesn't get infected. I've had these a few times, they hurt a bit and especially around the ankles, the skin has a tendency to swell up quite impressively. You CAN go to a doctor with it, you don't need to, they'll probably put some iodine on the wound or some kind of ointment that you can also get at any drug store.

OK then, I was on duty at Feild Day a few years ago and we found this guy (quite a small dude) who had trouble standing upright.

At first we thought he was just drunk, but it turned out one of his "mates" had lifted him above their head and thrown him at the floor.

We walked him back to the first aid center and even as we went he was becoming more and more wonky.

He couldn't stop apologising and I really felt for him. Such a sweet guy.

We sent him to the nearest A&E in an ambulance.

I do hope he was OK.

it happened while i was running in the woods by a small river, lots of horseflies in that area. it's unavoidable to get bitten by them often when being there in the summer, but usually it's just an itch and doesn't last very long...

from the beginning i thought this was something else actually.. i was running, and then felt a nasty sudden sting (unlike horsefly), i slapped there and looked down, but i got only a very short glimpse of the insect, i think it was bigger than a usual horsefly.. might have been a wasp/hornet or something... though these usually don't come after you right? i wasn't ever stung by a hornet, and can't remember when the last wasp sting was.

I was bitten by a Horsefly two weeks ago, too. No Problems with that, but I read that:

Ok that wasn't a very interesting one.

I did a duty at LED a few years back and spent the whole time in the treatment center looking after MDMA fuckwits.

One girl had travelled all the way from Denmark on her own to see Deadmau5 but had flipped out on something or other and was freaking everyone out with her psychotic gaze.

Another had to be physically restrained as she was screaming that we were out to get her and kept doing backflips and trying to take off all her clothes.

One girl had glowstick in her eyes.
