múm - Smilewound

Icelandic band múm will return with a brand new album this September, four years after the wishy-washy Sing Along To Songs You Don’t Know. The new album, entitled Smilewound, sees a slight shake up in the band’s ever-changing lineup, this time including the the return of third founding member Gyða Valtýsdóttir. The new album will be released on 17th September on Morr Music, and will feature eleven tracks, the last of which will be the collaborative effort the band made with popstar Kyle Minogue for the 2012 film Jack & Diane.

Recorded in the band’s own studio (an old Baltic farmhouse) and on the kitchen table after dinner, among other places, Smilewound is said to be airier and looser than previous records, and if the new single “Toothwheels” is anything to go by, then the band have returned to an electronic base, and for the first time in recent memory, they sound like they’re deepening their style. I'm not really feeling that new track. I used to love these guys and girls, but the latest couple of releases have been forgettable drivel :(

hmmm yeah, this one might be for hardcore mum fans only. it's a bit pop and no way near enough glitch.

I used to love their first two albums, but havent followed them for a long time. I think i kind of dropped out ater Summer Make Good, anythng worth checking out after that?

Sounds fresh to my ears, lovely sing along melodies all around.

yeah i quite like Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy

I think everything they have done has been great. but you get used to it so later stuff is less effective. if you discovered them via one of their later albums you'd love them i imagine. looking forward to hearing this, especially the kylie collab

i take that back. the new vocalist is more different on this one. after the twins left i didnt mind the new vocals so much but this time I'm usually digging the music before the vocals come in. when girls collide is a good example of a great instrumental

i've gone back and listened to Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy and it's far more pleasing. i wonder how this Kylie collab came about? the mind boggles.

i wish kylie were always their singer.

i liked go go smear. i missed their last album and the early stuff (early birds) album too.

slow down and candlestick i liked on first listen

On 2nd listen I noticed that one of the twins is back. i thought it was the new girl doing a bit of an impression. no wonder i like slow down so much. yay.

isn't bad, but far from a return to form...sounds like a cross between a bjork and fiona apple record
