Weird, I've got one of those mighty tiny things somewhere around here... My mom found it at an auction and mailed it to me with a bunch of Disney 45s and stuff. Never got it to play, sadly. I also got sent an old 78 player in a studded box, but it violently blew a fuse the only time I plugged it in, lol. Grandpa's mp3s are dangerous.

most likely it was a foil capacitor. They dry out and then can pop like that. It's easy to fix though if you still want to got it working. :)
