Tom Clancy - RIP

A bit young (I thought he was older), I wonder if it was a stroke or heart attack.

Clancy's writing abilities as a fiction author were a bit iffy beyond his knowledge of military tech but his early techno-thrillers are great reads and decent films. Hunt For Red October is one of my favorite movies and the book was even more engaging.

His book and VG franchises will surely plug along. RIP.

Never read any of his books. But I played the crap out of all the games he tagged his name in. Manly splinter cell.

I saw Hunt For Red October and read the book afterword. The aesthetics of that movie make it seem more akin to 80s sci-fi and action classics. The book is way more detailed with far more settings and characters. Ironically I read the other two books that were turned to film: Patriot Games and Clear And Present Danger. Beyond that, just played a few of the games. My brother really dug Splinter Cell though.

As a kid and teenage I was obsessed with military tech and history, to an extent that I was fairly detached with the horrors of war and combat and really more of a geek interested in the actual equipment. I still am to a certain degree, though more of a music fan than anything now. Clancy excelled in this aspect, in fact he wrote some great nonfiction books on military technology as well.

His secondary characters are quite one note, even in his better books. I've read sections of other ones, and even lol'd a bit at some of the plots of other books. I'm sure his rather straightforward neocon beliefs played into this. Either way, while he wasn't a literary genius he was an apt techno-thriller writer. Less imaginative than Michael Crichton but an engaging writer nonetheless. Quite a legacy he left behind in the video game world too, at least in the genre of realistic 1st person shooters.

Weirdly enough, the first girl I had a serious relationship with is now married to Thom Clancy, his son. Wonder how they're doing?

Whoa, that's random. Thom Clancy has a twitter, I suppose that might shed some light on how the family is holding up:

Tom Clancy books along with Wilbur Smith (perhaps Stephen King) have resided in almost every pile of books I've ever seen on planet Earth. On every communal space, on any book shelf, in any guest house, hotel, youth hostel, squat, mansion, northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere. Anywhere there's a pile of books there is a Tom Clancy novel. Thats pretty fucking insane. But I don't think I've ever read one lol.

I bet he died a very rich man.

He had not one, but two Simpsons appearances:

[the audience’s hands go down] Lenny: [at the microphone] Uh yeah, I'm a techno-thriller junkie, and I'd like to know, is the B-2 bomber more detectible when it rains? Kent Brockman: Oh, what do you think, Tom Clancy? Tom Clancy Well, the B-2… Lenny: No, no, no, I was asking Maya Angelou! Maya Angelou: The ebony fighter awakens, dabbled with the dewy beads of morn. Moe: Maya Angelou is black? Maya Angelou: It is a Mach-5 child, forever bound to suckle from the shriveled breast of Congress. Lenny: Oh, Maya, you're a national treasure!

Hello, this is Tom Clancy. Would I say, "If you're hunting for a good read this October, Marge Simpson's book is a clear and present danger to your free time"? Hell no I wouldn't. What do you mean I just said it? That doesn't count! Hello. Hello?

I loved a lot of the games and movies, but I don't think I ever finished one of his books... I remember trying to read Rainbow Six when I was younger but I think it was a little above my reading level at the time and I never finished it.
