Monome Aleph

Recommended Posts

Looks very interesting, $1400 is probably a bit more than I'm willing to part with.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

i have high hopes for this... could be this decade's nord modular

It better be easily editable, looking at how small that thing is gives me hand cramps and blurred vision already.

And I kinda doubt this is going to be this decades nord modular

man i really wish i had the balls to be an early adopter of stuff like this. It seems like it has a lot of potential(?) the problem is the demo video and the marketing materials for it do absolutely nothing to convince me to spend $1400 on it.
it's strange how sometimes things so expensive have terrible presentation to convince you of its power (see Aturia Origin)

I still don't understand it completely, does it really do something an ordinary laptop running MAX won't do?

I've still got an original 64, one of the first off the production line...

This seems very much boutique, the kind that Monome have managed to pull off so well across their various devices over the years. It'll sell, regardless...

[edit: I was confusing myself with the Elektron announcement!]

They don't seem to be willing to elaborate on that.

weird then that they expect their loyal fan base to shell out $1400 for a device so poorly explained. Kind of insulting actually. Please give us an in depth review if you have the time.

I think they say they wanted a box you could simply turn on and it would work instantly. no dependencies, no drivers, no bullshit; much like the monome which does one thing really good. I think I saw it is coming with a graphic programming language, similar to max..

really interested in this sort of stuff, but the price is just too much for me........ might as well try and reprogram my midibox thingy... I could hypothetically write my own code into that.... but I dunno if I have it in me to poke through assembler source.

the one thing im confused about is what kind of synthesis can it do, what does it sound like on its own? There is really no example of it generating sound where i can tell what it's doing. I'm really curious about it after reading the 'details' page of the website

th555, out of the box what kind of sounds can this thing make? Does it have any subtractive synths or effects built into it upon purchase?

I'd guess there just isn't much software written for it yet...

hence they can't show off its capabilities... it's a programmable DSP box, so it can do any kind of synthesis from VA to crazy phys-mod, as soon as someone implements it ;)

but it seems very prototype-y so far.... imo they teased it too early.

I don't know man, haven't bought the thing and I'm not going to. Just thought it was interesting to post here, especially since the monome looks like a great machine.

oh sorry, i literally read your first post as you just received one of these delivered to your house. thanks for sharing the info, i'm extremely curious about it's capabilities. Ezra buchla's involvement also piques my interest. Sorry if my frustrating over the ambiguity of it and price tag seemed directed at you in any way.

It's a programmable DSP. Basically, it does fuck-all until someone programs something cool to put in it. Then, it's anything it's programmed to be, from a stand-alone synth to a wacky filter to stick on your pedalboard. The thing about this particular one is that it's from Monome....and they have a pretty strong community base from their controller products, so there's likely to be quite a few good programmers creating interesting tools that can be loaded onto the Aleph.

I'm hoping I'm one of them. Mine will be here Friday.
