You know truth be told even (especially?) ironic invotion of "memes" leaves kind of a bad taste in my mouth. It all feels gauche, y'know? It's not that it isn't culture, because everything's culture yadda yadda yadda

to me it's that dispassionate, plodding elephant of consciously invoked culture, a speaking just to be heard. Nobody is truly invested in advice dog & image macros, right? Nobody reads a loaded phrase-chunk like "...and i'm just sitting here masturbating" and thinks "haha that is a truly clever statement". The only time any of this stuff is genuinely enjoyable is during that initial propagation period in which it truly does feels like an act of absurd deconstructionalist humour, and as time goes on that window seems to have shrunk from months to weeks to days to hours

That's just my opinion. I'm not even saying this is a bad thing, really. It's a thing! It's really quite interesting to me, how it increasingly feels like "the opiate of the masses" (don't really dig that term but it carries a vibe) is being produced by those very same masses. No shady governing body or towering celebrity instution to rally impotently against

The reason that I toss memes around is because I think they're gross and so the invocation is supposed to be gross.

Personally, irony itself leaves a bad taste in my mouth as I grew up surrounded by jaded ironic people so I try to only use it sparingly but sometimes irony is just what le doctor ordered.
