SR4
So in the past year I have been introduced to Stewart Lee and he's my new favorite comic. This guy is fucking hilarious with his deadpan delivery. But I figure he's been big in Britain for quite a while, what is the opinion of him in the isles? Oversaturated? Overrated? My fave because I can't stand Top Gear. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRRPFXdIZrM theres another hilarious one on Braveheart but I'm too lazy to find it. b born droid
Funny man. Sometimes goes overboard with his stuff but in general he's one of our better comedians. MadameChaos
Brilliant. Saw him live recently, still hilarious. The Ang Lee joke still kills it. Don't make me Ang Lee! SR4
yeah there are a few where I could completely understand people getting turned off, but for some reason I find those overwrought/overly long bits to be hilarious (the pear cider one)....I think it reminds me of another fave comic (David Cross) telling 15+ min stories. gabrielconroy
I've seen him a few times, and he's my favourite stand up. His languid, half-pause delivery has been perfected over the years until it's now a baffling weapon. Having listened to a lot fo Daniel Kitson bootleg recordings he's who I want to see the most, though, if I could only get a ticket to a proper show (I saw him a while back doing a work in progress show, but it was only half finished). logboy
in a way, a has-been that's still far more interesting as a result of showing the newer comedians (and fans thereof) that they should concentrate harder on their ideas than on a chance to be pleasantly entertaining whilst gaining vast wealth from stadium-filling nonsense, as has become the norm to such an extent here that tv only seems to primarily serve as promotional content for the upcoming cash-in live performances people will inevitably become aware of thanks to facebook and twitter. i like lee's ability to copyright his material by turning it into very abstract rambles, which i find quite creative in that it's very individual territory that's as easy to spot a rip-off of than it would otherwise be. quite suprised that the UK isn't better known internationally as a source for comedy. it's as utterly fundamental to our culture and identity as design or music, for example. mind you, the way comedy has exploded in popularity here since the economy hit the shitter, you'd be forgiven - many british folk seem so out-of-tune with comedy that they'll watch any old crap, which has lowered the bar considerably. still, plenty of stuff to look back over or to dig up. I loved the puerile 'Uruguay' school joke memory. The footnotes were a pain in the arse at first but enjoyed them after a while, great to see the humour rationale explained out in minuscule detail. He's on in Liverpool tonight as well and I didn't even fucking know about it. Gutted. Guest chunky
' tomorrow with richard not judy'. pretty funny for kids, not sure how it stands up now. if you enjoy this you might like dom joly and charlie brooker. gotta prefer lee evans to stewart lee. they both dress similarly. lee evans has a slapstick persona and jokes about daily life in a neutral way. stewart lee has a grumpy paralytic misery guts type of persona mixed with political opinions from the guardian/independent newspapers. best comedians are harry hill and al murray, they are too funny. their only goal is making you laugh. dominick diamond was a stand up too? was stewart lee ever on gamesmaster? cookdandbombd.co.uk is the watmm of lefty english comedy...... more there ps rhod gilbert Edited October 14, 2013 by chunky Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/80845-stewart-lee/#findComment-2075086 Share on other sites
