Wim Wenders Appreciation Society

Recommended Posts

I recently watched 'Der Amerikanische Freund' and 'Paris, Texas' and adored them both, beautifully shot, great casting, wonderful clothes and colours (with lots of references to Nicholas Ray who is in D.A.F and typing that has made realise where D.A.F get there name from) and excellent soundtracks. Can anyone here recommend similar films to Wenders (no matter how lose)? Any other fans here?

Regards,

F

By the end of Paris, Texas all I could think was the poor child suddenly being taken from his family to another and the poort brother who raised the boy suddenly not having him anymore, but there is that bit where the mother goes "you can't fill your emptiness with your child" so maybe the brother and his wife where doing that, not that that justifies there child being taken away from them. also harry dean's character is just a bit of a bad person, tying the mother up to the oven when drunk and being a shit in general.

You're in for a treat with Wings of Desire. It's special - a true film gem. Make sure you watch it on bluray or get as high a quality version as you can. Tis' worth it.

you should check out his films, they're great!

~~~~~~ CONTROVERSIAL OPINION ~~~~~~~
I actually think he's a better documentarian than a narrative filmmaker. Buena Vista Social Club is a total trip - fantastic, and that new one about pina bausch the dancer made me actually care about dance. And that was all in the direction - the Rite of Spring scene was some of the best performances on film I've ever seen.
Wings of Desire has it's moments.. but I never really felt like I "got" it -- Paris, Texas a bit more (plus it has that great scene which Orb sampled for OOBE live haha)
I have seen Buena Vista Social Club, I did not realise it was by him! Great film, will check out the Pina Bausch.
D.A.F has a great soundtrack, strings are quite Afxy
Alice in der Städten is a good one too. I couldn't stand Im Lauf der Zeit, though, that was some boring shit. Wenders is pretty hit or miss for me, I often think he's a bit all façade and no substance but some of his films are pretty enjoyable still...
I also like his 80's documentaries, they're not as good as the ones Lopez mentioned but I like them in a hypnotic sort of way... Tokyo-ga and Notebook on Cities and Clothes.
i know what you mean, they seem to just hint at things then explore them but i still love em.
Just realised my parents have Paris Texas on DVD and i've never bothered watching it, just remember seeing the cover. I'll have to borrow it.
:doge: Jet fuel can't melt dank memes :doge:
