Hack your headphones

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine posted this on their facebook:

Applicable if you have Sennheiser HD-555s or a similar make, but, as I do not, I applied the concept to some Audio-Technica ATH-T22s I've been using by popping the plastic covers off & drilling some airholes

The effect is that the bass is louder and more clear, as well as the stereo being wider, and the general audio quality overall sounding a bit less muddy.

I don't necessarily recommend doing it on your main pair of headphones, but if you have a spare pair that you don't mind experimenting on, I think you will notice a significant improvement

cheers

lol @ drilling holes in your headphones

This was an experiment in what worked best on enhancing the sound quality of a pair of cheap over-the-ear headphones, and I tested a few different things before drilling any holes. Seems silly to disbelieve when you have no information to back it up, and you haven't heard the end result.

not saying anything one way or the other about its efficacy but it is kinda funny when you think about it. lol. drilling holes into your headphones.

I'd heard of that HD555 hack a while ago (minus the drilling holes part, I don't recall that), apparently that was the only thing differentiating it from a higher model? the HD595s or something. cool trick.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

if anything you should hear less bass from doing that. depending on the cans. use a measurement microphone before and after, like dave rat, and post the results.

@ the vid, if foam absorbed bass, because its rubbery and bouncy, so would the earlobes. think of how much more bass you'd get if you chop those useless flaps of skin off.

@idiots: dont cut your ears off.

Why drill holes? Just dremel off the whole back cover.

Jah mang- I totally miss my Sennheiser HD590s... :-( On the upside, I now duct tape 500 watt speakers to my head, and the bass is immense. Still not as clear as me ol' Sennheiser's, but not much is.....

Just thought now that it might be possible to buy replacement speaker bits for Sennheiser higher-end headphones, then just attach them to cheaper sets. Sort of like buying Mont Blanc pen replacements and putting them in cheaper pen cases.
