don't know if anybody noticed but when i first heard "Recks on" on Exai i immediately thought it was a tribute to Scorn.

turns out you can even write Scorn with the title of the track - Recks on

i'm even wondering if i haven't heard this snare in a scorn track...

nice

nah recks on is an 80s hip hop homage, that emu snare is on loads of hip hop records, and the booming 808 etc. more of a shout to meat beat manifesto, renegade soundwave, keith leblanc, duke bootee etc

but i can see why someone who doesn't really listen to 80s hip hop but listens to scorn might think that

Everybody's talking about booming first half, but what makes this track a highlight for me is a second half (after beat transition). It's so intense i perceive it as the actual ending of the record

I considered starting a thread on Recks On, but I guess I was a bit slow on the draw. No biggie.

I'm not surprised at SB's comment regarding homage to '80s hip hop - the opening percussion is a dead giveaway. I remember hearing some of a Meat Beat Manifesto album from that era - Storm This Studio I think it's called.

That drop at about 3:56 onward though gives me goosebumps, especially those sawtooth pads. I'm sure I've said this before, but listening to it on the road at night with minimal lighting really gets the adrenaline pumping. Get a vague feeling of being watched or followed by autonomous drones or some other electronic surveillance.

i dont know, it still sounds like Scorn to me with that weird nasally bassline synth. Sounds like something Straight off Plan B to me. Remember Scorn sounds 80s hiphoppish too, but no '80s hip hop' used basslines that dirty and grimey.

I agree with the original poster it absolutely sounds like a Scorn homage, and i still believe it is but Sean was unwilling to admit it .

wait, so one of the artists involved has gone on record to say that it isn't an homage to Scorn, and that's still not enough to confirm that it isn't an homage to Scorn?

Definitely a, probably THE, standout track on Exai for me. The first time I heard it and that kick drum and snare started off iI said "HOLY FUCK!". Its such a heavy tune and the 2nd half is great too. Never listened to Scorn before so I cant comment on whether its an homage or not.

well in regards to the first poster, i don't think he was aware of the denial. For me, I'm not saying that it's a 'scorn homage'. I'm saying that it sounds highly influenced by the sound palette of Scorn ON TOP of sounding like an 80s hip hop homage, which is what Sean already said. But i will say that when sean said 'thats funny, its a piano' he might not have been talking about the nord/virusish bassline going through the first half of the track that sounds like an extremely accurate Plan B era Scorn impression. Regardless of what anybody says that's what it sounds like, and I'm glad i'm not the only one who noticed it.
