and i'm not saying that everything was better in the old days, but there is a clear progression towards being more blatantly slutty. madonna was a whore too, but miley coming out with teddy bears, pretending to suck dudes off on stage and all that, it's a new level of shameless. in her own words she said something about the teddy thing being a kind of 'creepy' but also 'sexy' because of teddy bears being a kids thing. so it's like shes openly admitting that she wanted to work some kind of pedo angle into her act. and it made her person of the year. act like there's no difference between now and then all you want. if they did a song about bjs back in the 70s it'd be very heavily abstracted and poeticized before it had any chance of being a radio hit. so yeah i'll go ahead and stand by the sentiment of everything i said. it's a progression towards stupidifying things to maximum extremes, ala idiocracy.

You should read the lyrics to Take a walk on the wild side. They're pretty descriptive.

Sure things might be more sexualized compared to what came before, but in context they're relatively similar.

ok yeah the lyrics are pretty descriptive, but it's not gratuitous. the sex stuff in that song, all the things it's describing, it's to be a part of a poetic whole. and i'm not even some big poetry buff/wanker. i think jim morrison's lyrics tried too hard to be poetic lots of times, if not most times, for example. i can't claim to know what reed was getting at and i'm not a big fan but i do like the song, but to me it seems like he's putting a spotlight on some elements of society that were/are on the outside of 'normal'. and juxtaposing that with the mellow music and the sweet strings, and his manner of 'singing' the lyrics in an almost folksy way, it's like he was trying to say 'these are people too, even if lots of people would look down on them'

so fuck yeah. i'd say it's hella poetic. so i'm not saying sex or even descriptive language should never be used, but the current trend is to just use it gratuitously. lou reed wasn't like promoting blow jobs or singing about how girls like to lick his dick. he was laying out a song that had multiple layers which you didn't even have to think about if you didn't want to, but they are clearly there. none of the shit in the op has any of that, and i think it's funny that for example, lady gaga is supposed to be an artistic version of the pop star, yet looking at the track titles on her latest album i have to wonder how her singing about sex and dressing up like a weirdo is any more artistic then miley cyrus doing it. especially when she has lyrics like 'do what you want with my body'. and in a duet with a dude who made vids of him pissing on underaged girls even, ha. those lyrics are the norm of the day now. def not so in past decades.
