probably old news for some, but i just found this nifty tool on Discogs that tells you the minimum, median and maximum worth of your collection based on recent market activity. go to 'My Collection', then at the top right click the graph icon ('Text with statistics' if you mouseover).

my median is £5070.98. that's a lot more than i expected. i should probably get some home contents insurance.

Hah, this is pretty surprising.

min: $4,188.57

median: $6,605.45

max: $9,842.08

I've got several more library LPs that I have to add, assuming they even have a listing on discogs. That'll probably boost it up more.

i find it comforting knowing that i have a few g's worth of records and CDs... i guess if i was absolutely destitute i could gradually pawn shit off to survive for a decent while. obviously the 'value' of your collection depends on where you live (e.g. item prices for UK are generally higher than US/continent as people ask slightly more for lower shipping cost/avoiding customs, etc.), condition of items, and so forth, but still. surprising to see a figure laid out like that!

I did this Discogs calculation thing before I sold 80% of my collection a couple years ago ... in my experience, the records sold for somewhat more than the 'median' that Discogs lists. The trick is that 'minimum' includes sales of records in like G- condition, without a sleeve, etc. Plus records get more valuable as time goes on, often, so the calculations lag a bit.

Anyway, for my current collection of 137 things:

  • Minimum: $1,497.71
  • Median: $2,424.02
  • Maximum: $3,843.74

my collection is so expensive that my rarest records don't even have discogs listings. I have a bunch of internal studio promos original pressings of Bernard Herman scores from the 50s. My Ennio Morricone collection alone is probably $5,000 at least. Yeah im a bad bass, but i wish i had ocd :(

I've only put about 2/3 of my collection into discogs. Usually I do it as soon as I buy something, but I get lazy sometimes. I mostly only do it for the rare/expensive stuff too, hah.

Here's my incomplete amount:

Minimum: A$2,502.44

Median: A$3,979.45

Maximum: A$6,265.55

Strangely enough, some of the records in my collection that go for the most on discogs are ones that I spent very little money on. For example, the Broadcast & Focus group album that I bought for $17, sealed, now has a median price of $107, what?

Or this, which I got in a big bag of records that I paid $50 for, total, from a friend. $82 median? God damn.

interesting to know. i often entertain the thought of going digital and selling everything, but i worry i'd be remorseful... how do you like digital life?

i've done it over the course of a number of years... had an account there for a decade or so. don't think i've ever gone through and systematically added everything i have, but i'd say 99% of what i own is in my Discogs collection - i don't have many obscurities.

I've started cataloging my colection on discogs like 4 different times already. The enthusiasm always lasted between 0 and 10 minutes, after which I've always given up

I don't have a big collection but I'm actually afraid to do this. To see how much money I've wasted. Curiosity might win though.
