name that synth

any idea what synth is being played from 3:56 to 4:15

It could be any early 70's synth with an internal sequencer and 'noise' or 'audio in' as an LFO shape

...or the ability for a VCO to be the LFO source

...or a patchable modulation matrix where anything can modulate anything

dunno, just buy an ARP2600 and call it good

the very end of it made me think arp2600 with VCO 2 modulating the filter CV in, probably the single most awesome analog synthesizer sound ever.

Yeah ARP 2600 sounds about right, given the era. 3:56 to 4:15 was about all I could stomach tho.

Based on the 2 hours of my life I've spent with an ARP 2600, that sounds right.

EDIT: in reference to OP

I'm pretty sure that most of Aphex Twin's pads on Selected Ambient Works 85-92 and Surfing On Sine Waves are a DX-100.

The pads in saw 2 were pro 80's sampler presets from a sound library
