Lucas
Hey, I was wondering if someone having more knowledge about electronic music hardware could help me understanding how Ceephax works according to that video ? I make music with all my stuff connected to the computer through audio interface so pure hardware setups are kind of mythology for me. It's clear that all the gear goes into or through the mixer but I'm not sure how all the stuff is sequenced. There must be a master hardware sequencer but where it is on the video ? Is it the keyboard with the digit display (because at some point Andy performs a note transposition and all the instrument seem to follow that transposition) ? and what is the use of the computer with notes displayed ? Is that an Amiga ? Are all the rhythm and grooveboxes connected together through MIDI or do those type of box use another protocol to sync and communicate ? thanks if you can help! gunnar
all the parts are sequenced induvidually (using the hardware's internal sequencer). there is no master sequencer. TR-707 is the master sync however, as can be seen at the beginning of the video. all machines are connected to the mixing desk, and are then recorded into a computer (or a digital recorder/mixer). with separate audio channel for each synth/drum machine. from there on he can do edits to the recorded audio to get the final result. protocol used: din sync or midi depending on the machine. mcbpete
The computer screen is a midi monitoring thing where you can see the midi values being transmitted. Like this: I'm normally pretty good at guessing the system from the font and resolution but I'm a bit stumped here. Looks a little too high for a C64 but a little too low for an Amiga (possibly a C128 - though noone owns that system so I'd be suprised !) Lucas
Thanks guys for your answers, now I guess I know what I wanted to. At the moment I'm thinking a lot how I could modify my setup being more hardware-based, I mean giving the computer and the DAW less weight in the whole configuration, and solving those kind of interrogations could help me figure out how to go forward with my own stuff but the video is really cool anyway ;-) Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide Lucas's signature Hide all signatures antape @ soundcloud Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/81923-questions-about-the-fossil-funk-jam-video/#findComment-2115214 Share on other sites
weakmassive
Have you listened to the 2 "studio special" episodes of the EDMX Radio Show? He makes a track and describes what he's doing. If I remember correctly, for sequencing he most mostly using his MPC and then the SH-101 sequencer triggered by drum hits and his modular sequencer.http://dmxkrew.blogspot.com/2010/01/fifteen-studio-special.htmlhttp://dmxkrew.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/twenty-six.html Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/81923-questions-about-the-fossil-funk-jam-video/#findComment-2115451 Share on other sites

weakmassive
Sure - I'm surprised these podcasts don't get brought up more often. Also, read the comments on those pages - he answers some more questions.
