I have a gen 2 Apple tv Modded with a 360gb HD, and flashed with XBMC, unfortunately that locks me out of using apps like Netflix and Hulu but gues what, I can take this thing anywhere, with NO internet connection, and watch a shitload of iTunes purchases and Handbrake rips I've done over the years.

Positive Metal Attitude

Between Amazon, Apple TV, VUDU, bittorrent, etc., it won't be long before I get rid of my cable portion of my Comcast bill - thing is, they offered it cheaper than if I got the internet all by itself, so why not?

Al-A-Carte TV is coming - slowly, but soon there will be little free content (at least without a subscription) - the good side is you'll only pay for what you want - the bad part is you'll probably pay more overall, and you'll have multiple bills to deal with.

I recently had an experience where we were bored and decided to watch The Hobbit (I hadn't seen it) - so I checked Amazon - purchase only, no rental (I don't want to own the damn thing, just watch it), VUDU - purchase, no rental, Netflix - not available at the time, Apple TV - purchase, no rental (I surmised they moved it from rental to purchase to cash in on the second movie being in theatres) - finally I said fuck it, fired up bittorrent and got a 1080P BD rip of it in 24 minutes. I tried to legitimately watch it, but they made it difficult. I also got a DVD quality screener of the second movie while I was mad and watch it too.

The media companies need to make the barriers to watching something on the customer's terms go away if they want to eliminate the urge to pirate something.

We made the switch when we moved to San Diego. I don't mind watching things the next day via hulu on some shows I watch.

what's the deal with hulu plus?

hulu plus is just hulu except you get shows pretty quickly after they air and there is a TON more content available. plus you need to subscribe to use hulu on appletv. its like 7.99 a month (same price as netflix)

it's kind of meh in that you still have ads in the shows you watch but it's a LOT less ads than watching something on tv

but yeah. between that, netflix, and piracy, we're doing pretty good over here.

i am worried about not being able to watch sports though. i can deal with watching tv shows a few days later but not being able to watch live yankees or nfl is weird.

for baseball there's this: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/index.jsp?product=appletv

dunno anything about football though. i think you can get nfl sunday ticket or whatever and stream it to the apple tv from your computer. there might be a jailbreak option, too.

nice. thanks!

I'm loving the idea of canceling cable. my cable company is horrible. I absolutely hate them and I'm stuck with them.
